Chapter Twelve: Jace

“Hey, Jace. How’re you doing?”

It was Reese, rose-cheeked and bright-eyed, his backpack slung over his shoulder, looking for all the world like the young academy freshman he was, not an omega who had recently given birth to twins.

It gave Jace hope he’d one day have his energy back, and the ability to walk about easily, not waddling as if he was carrying a ball between his legs. At this point, it was hard to imagine. Hell, it was hard to remember that a few months ago he hadn’t been like that, that he hadn’t always been hugely pregnant.

“I’m all right,” he said, rubbing his enormous bump. “Getting really heavy and achy.”

“You look good.” Reese grinned at him. “You look ready. When are you due?”

“Uh...” Jace did a quick calculation in his head. With everything that had happened in the past two weeks, he’d somehow lost track. “Soon?”

Reese snickered. “That’s precise. Then again, when you enter your last month, there is no such thing as precision. The babies come when they decide to come, and that’s that.”

“Right... How reassuring.”

“Want to grab some coffee with me?”

Jace nodded. “I’ll text Marcus so he doesn’t worry. I finished from class early and he was supposed to come meet me here afterward.”

They walked together toward the common cafeteria, Jace texting Marcus, listening with half an ear as Reese chattered on about babies and milk and pudding and... potato flour? Huh?

“... and then they were fine,” Reese was saying as Jace put his phone away. “Like magic.”

“Magic?”

“Yeah, their little asses were like new after that.”

Jace blinked. What has he missed? “With the potato flour?”

“Well, yes. Best thing for the rash.”

Huh.

Wow.

“Speaking of magic...” Reese led the way into the cafeteria and led Jace to one of the window seats. “How is Marcus?”

“Better, I think.” Jace propped a hand on the table and lowered himself carefully into the seat. His balance was shot these days, his center of gravity completely off. “He went to classes today and walked about looking steadier on his feet than I am.”

“But he’s not cured completely.”

“No, the shaman said that the rest is up to him. That he can’t break the spell, that Marcus has to do it.”

“How?”

Jace shook his head, worry returning to haunt him. He rubbed the top of his belly to calm the kicking babies. “I think Marcus is asking himself the same question.”

“Damn. Stay here, I’ll get us something to drink. Chamomile tea?”

“That would be good,” Jace admitted. “My stomach has been unsettled these past few days.”

“Wait here.” Reese was up in a flash, again annoying Jace with the ease with which he moved, and hurried to the bar to order their drinks.

Jace’s phone dinged with a text and he opened it to find a reply from Marcus.

‘Come to the salon afterward, I’ll be there with the guys.’

No hearts or kisses. It wasn’t the alpha way, but Jace, unable to resist, replied with a row of kissy faces and hearts and hit Send.

He laughed when he got a reply with a smiling poop.
