Chapter 16
For her part, Madison just looked annoyed.
âI swear,â she said, her voice an exasperated grunt through her teeth. âI know how to handle these things safely.â
The clinic was a small place that was decorated too cheerfully for what it was, cute little plants and soft colors, watercolor paintings on the walls. Iâd just about shoved my way through everything to get to the room Madison was in, and my throat felt tight when I saw her with one arm wrapped in bandages.
âMadison,â I said, my voice crackling, as I sat down next to her. âWhat happened?â
âSomeone got a little careless with machinery,â Doctor Harwoodâs voice said, as he came into the room behind me, a man in his sixties with a small gray beard and round glasses, who walked with his hands clasped behind his back. âJust because sheâs used it a million timesâand ended up in here a million times, Iâll have you know.â
Madison looked out the window. âItâs just a wrist sprain and some bad cuts. I was putting the last thing on, and of course, thatâs when it collapsed.â
I wrung my hands in my lap. âAre you okay?â I turned back to the doctor. âNever mind. Sheâll never admit to being hurt. Is she okay?â
âIâm perfectly fine,â she said, the sharp edge in her voice more like she was trying to convince herself. Maybe the doctor.
âSheâll make a full recovery, very little risk of complications,â he said. âBut try to keep her from doing anything hasty for me, will you, Paige? The girl doesnât know how to keep herself in line.â
Ugh, I was going to be sick. I turned back to Madison with my heart in my throat. âItâs my fault, isnât it?â I said, my voice small. âI probably put something together wrongââ
She looked away. âI was telling you what to do. Thereâs no use blaming anyone.â
âOh, god, that means it was my fault.â I shifted the seat closer to her. âMadison, Iâm soââ
âSpare me the commentary,â she sighed.
âMake sure youâre not doing anything too strenuous with that arm for a while,â Doctor Harwood said, and then he turned to me. âOh, Iâll have better luck telling you. Make sure sheâs not doing anything too strenuous with that arm.â
âI will,â I said, voice shaky. âIâm going to take care of her.â
âIâll be good this time,â Madison grunted. âIâll get plenty of rest. Iâd feel bad if I worried Paige.â
Somehow, it was only when she said that when I realized weâd had quite a bit of work planned for her tomorrow. My stomach turned as I looked back to her. âWaitâMadisonââ
âItâs really fine,â she said. âDonât worry about it. Iâm going to rest. Mind giving us a minute, Doc?â
Doctor Harwood put his hands up. âYou know she has a problem when sheâs gotten too comfortable being here. Take your time, Madison. Just donât do anything too hasty.â
Heâd barely left the room and shut the door before Madison did something too hasty. Without a word, she swept
