As she came to, Alayah could hear the male voices in the room. They were talking about her and her powers and how strong her magic was. And the fact Edric’s father was not happy… surprise. God, her head hurt.
“Ali?”
She lifted her hand to press against the pain in her head, opening her eyes she saw Edric’s face, it sent a calming ripple through each part of her that had ached from her internal fire earlier.
“Hi Princess.” His voice was calm and comforting.
“Hi.” Her own, not so much.
“How do you feel?” A voice asked that she wasn’t so familiar with.
She turned her head in its direction, it was Colter. “Tired, and my skin feels weird, it feels sensitive. Like the blankets are made out of straw. And my head hurts, so bad. What happened?”
“You don’t remember?” Colter inquired gently.
“Not all of it, I can remember Dorian chasing me. I can remember being upset because he told me that I wasn’t Edric’s mate and I should possibly look at letting him— go,” her voice broke.
“Ali. There is a lot I haven’t told you, I know. But I need you to trust in me right now. Trust that I love you. Trust that you are mine.”
“Then just tell me now, because this feeling inside me Edric, isn’t one that I like. It feels like everything is falling apart and I can’t control it. Everything I once knew is now gone, including you. We shouldn’t have come here. I shouldn’t have come here.”
He lowered himself beside her, so she could see into his eyes and feel his whisper against her skin, “I haven't gone anywhere and you Princess, are my mate. I need you. Trust me, I will explain everything, but I need and want you to be better before I do. It’s complicated and a lot to take in for someone who hasn’t grown up with our customs or learning.”
She was his mate? Relief, confusion, and the feeling of contentment loitered in those four words.
“Ali,” Colter interrupted as he handed Edric the glass. “I’m going to give you something to help you sleep for a little while longer, alright?”
“Colter is our healer.” Edric nodded as he took the glass from his hand.
“Half assed healer would be more appropriate. But I hear you are pretty handy with a needle and thread yourself Ali. You might have to give me a lesson or two, my sewing skills are somewhat non-existent.”
“It’s true, last time he stitched me up it was more of a jab and stab effort. Edric smiled as he lifted the glass to her lips. “He made the scar that you said looked like a bite mark. It didn’t look that bad before he touched me.”
Alayah drank the liquid in the glass, it had an overly sweet flavor to it but was manageable. It only took moments before it seemed to calm her, but making her more tired than she already was. She needed to sleep.
