* * * *

Irwin didn’t want to talk to the alpha. He didn’t want to admit what he’d been going through and how he’d allowed his mother to hurt him. He didn’t want to appear weak.

Even though he was.

He truly didn’t understand why fate had thought it was a good idea to choose him as a mate for Farley. Farley deserved someone stronger, but unfortunately, there was no way for them to change any of this. They were mates, and that was that.

Thankfully, Farley didn’t seem to hate the idea of them being together. Irwin certainly didn’t, even though he knew he came with a lot of problems. If he wanted to be with Farley and deserve him, he needed to make changes, and the first of those was to deal with his mother. Once she couldn’t hurt him anymore and her control over him was gone, he could change his life and make him worth it to his mate.

He and Farley went upstairs to change. The only clothes Irwin had belonged to Jordan, but when he reached for them, Farley shook his head and grabbed more of his clothes to give him. He was taller than Irwin, but thankfully, not by much. His jeans were too long but didn’t fall off Irwin’s body, and he felt good wearing them. He wasn’t sure Farley realized how much stronger Irwin felt just from wearing one of his sweaters and jeans. They carried his mate’s scent, and being able to smell Farley made Irwin feel stronger and safer.

Just what he needed to face his mother.

Irwin could have talked to Gal a long time ago. After the alpha had taken over the pride and settled in, it would have been fairly easy to sneak up to the roof and around the house to his office. Irwin hadn’t done it because he’d been afraid of his mother’s reaction, but also because he knew there was a chance she’d be kicked out of the pride. She and Kevin had been lucky they’d been allowed to stay after what had happened with Simon, but this would probably mean she’d be kicked out, and Irwin didn’t know how to feel about that.

She was his mother, and he didn’t want her to be without a home and a pride, but he realized that she didn’t deserve to be a pride member. She wasn’t a bully just to him. Things had improved after Gal took over, but before, she’d bullied anyone who wasn’t in her small group of friends. She was more cautious now, and she’d turned more of her attention to Irwin, but she was still the same person she’d been then, and Irwin didn’t think she would ever change.

But she was still his mother, and doing this was hard for him. It was a choice he needed to make, though. Be honest and talk to Gal, tell him what his mother had been doing, or lose Farley.

That was one thing he wasn’t ready to do. He didn’t know what things would be like between them, but he wanted to find out.
