Keenan held Miles against his chest and knocked on the door in front of him—Rabbit’s front door.

He was relieved when Samuel opened, even though he wasn’t wearing a shirt. It didn’t make Keenan uncomfortable, but he also didn’t want to behave as if he didn’t have eyes. However, the situation didn’t lend itself to harmless flirting or appreciation, damn it.

Samuel smiled, clearly not caring about his state of half-nakedness. “Hey, Keenan. Elton told me you were in town, but I didn’t think I’d find you on my porch.” His gaze went to Miles, who was awake and looking up at Keenan. “I didn’t know you’d adopted another kid.”

“That’s because I didn’t. Can I come in?”

Samuel blinked in confusion but stepped aside. Keenan walked in, going straight to the kitchen where he knew he’d find Elton if the man was home. He was always there, cooking or baking. Sure enough, Elton was behind the stove humming when Keenan walked in.

“I told you not to come in if you don’t want to feel hot,” Elton said without looking back, and Keenan supposed he thought he was talking to Samuel.

“I have a baby for you.”

The whisk Elton had been using dropped to the counter, white stuff spilling everywhere as he turned around, his eyes wide. “I’m sorry?”

Keenan didn’t miss the way his gaze went to Miles without even stopping on him. He might have been offended any other day, but he wanted Miles to be the focus of everyone today.

“What is it?” Elton squeaked.

“I just told you. A baby.”

Elton shook his head. He grabbed the counter with both hands, his knuckles going white. “I can see that. Why do you have a baby? And why did you bring it here?”

Samuel had entered the kitchen while Elton was freaking out, and he looked both hesitant and hopeful. “We didn’t put in an application. Did we?”

“Of course we didn’t,” Elton snapped. “We decided to wait until Rabbit was ready, remember?”

Samuel seemed taken aback by Elton’s reaction, stepping away before shaking himself and going to his mate. Keenan felt kind of guilty, so he explained, “This is Miles. Someone abandoned him at the animal shelter in town. The shelter called my department, and my colleague called me. She asked me to pick up Miles and to keep him for a few days until she manages to find a more permanent home for him.”

“And you thought bringing him here would be a good idea? You know what Rabbit thinks of children.”

Keenan did, which was why he’d brought Miles there. “I know, but I can’t exactly keep Miles with me, considering I’m not home. I could go back to Whitedell, but I don’t want to cut my vacation short when I have a perfect family here for him.”

Elton shook his head. “You know we can’t. How could you even do this? Bring me this baby, make me hope when you already knew we wouldn’t be able to take care of him.”

Okay, Elton had managed to make Keenan feel slightly guilty, but he really did think Rabbit needed a good talking to.
