Chapter 10

Doyle and Kord hustled out of the building and back out to their car. The afternoon air was cool and refreshing after sharing the interview room with the Morgan kid.

“This is getting to be a thing,” Doyle said.

“A thing?” Kord sounded wary as he fastened his seatbelt.

“You ‘n me. Hopping in the car. Rushing off to a case.”

“Don’t get carried away, candy ass. And don’t even mention Starsky and Hutch,” Kord said but the edge was gone from his voice. He didn’t sound as gruff and tough.

“I’m kind of getting into the job again. It’s been rough for a while,” Doyle said.

“It’s different for me. It’s not that I don’t enjoy this work. It’s just not undercover. Y’know? That’s what I love.”

“As long as I’m not the reason you don’t enjoy it,” Doyle teased. But underneath, he wasn’t joking. He needed Kord to, at the very least, enjoy working with him. “I get the undercover stuff. Maybe they’ll put you back under when we solve this case.”

“You’re pretty confident.” Kord hit the gas and drove a little faster than Doyle was comfortable with but it was a long ride to the northeast and going a little faster couldn’t hurt.

“I have to be. Our jobs depend on solving the case.”

“Okay, but what if we don’t? Not sayin’ I don’t think we can crack it. But what if we don’t?”

Doyle hesitated. He’d never talked about his fears or his plans. But, he thought, maybe now was the time to do that. Talking about it might make things feel more solid. More real in the event this case went south.

“You’ll laugh.”

“Hey, after what I’ve seen in the past couple days. You gotta be kidding. So, give.”

“I thought—y’know, when things went bad a while back and I was on the verge of being let go—I thought maybe I’d go out on my own. Work for myself.”

“What like a private police force? A security agency?”

“Nothing like that. Maybe a private investigation agency. Always thought that was kinda romantic.”

“Oh, why’d you have to go and spoil it? Romantic? A PI is a tough guy. Rough. Not some pink lace romantic.”

“Takes all kinds.” Doyle laughed.

“Takes a lot of determination to put something like that together.”

“But you think it’s a good idea?” Doyle asked. “I mean aside from the romantic thing?”

“Sure. It’s a great idea. I don’t know why you didn’t ditch the department and do it. You just keep hanging on and taking all that abuse.” Kord looked over at him. “And don’t think I haven’t noticed. Those fuckers are cruel.”

“Yeah, well, I like the job. I can deal with them and their crap.”

“I’d’ve punched out one of ‘em a long time ago. In fact, I can do that for you if you’re too much of a pussy to do it.”

“I don’t need a knight in shining armor,” Doyle said. Although he wouldn’t mind Kord in shining gold armor sweeping him off his feet and holding him close to that muscular chest. He knew he could take all the ribbing the guys had to offer, if he had Kord.
