"I only feel close to my sister. Mom is always doing her own thing and Dad’s never around," Jenna says, worrying her bottom lip.

On our walk up the beach, we reach the cove, a secluded area surrounded by rocks and we’re completely alone. I take a seat on the sand and she sits next to me. About halfway down the beach, she started opening up to me about her family life. Tonight, the date has gotten more personal, our conversation holds more weight, and for whatever reason I don't feel like clamming up and running away.

"Sounds like normal family dynamics to me. Aren’t teenagers closer to their siblings than they are their parents?" I ask. "I’m closer to Max than I am my mom." I swallow hard. "Dad and I were tight, but…"

The full moon casts a warm glow along the beach. Jenna places a gentle hand on my thigh and looks up at me with those pale, pretty eyes.

She sits there and doesn't say anything. I'm assuming she's waiting for me to elaborate. When I don't, she smiles and nods. "Was it hard for you when Max left for college?"

"Yeah. Even though he is a few years older than I am, we still hung out all the time. We played sports together or Xbox. But I'm proud of him; he worked hard and got great grades. He has a scholarship. Max has a bright future." My chest swells with pride. You'd think I'd be jealous of his accomplishments, but I'm not. He was always my biggest supporter when I was swimming, and he deserves everything he's worked so hard for.

"I'm glad he is doing so well. He always seemed like a nice guy. I think it's going to be hard next year, leaving home and my sister." She looks off toward the sea as if she's contemplating what her future will look like.

I take her hand in mine and lock our fingers together. “I think you're going to love college. Sure, it will be a transition, but look at you this summer. You've really come out of your shell."

Tilting her head toward me, she gives me a shy smile. "You think so?"

"I do."

"Thanks," she says. “What about you? You told me that you needed to earn money before you go to college. Do you have a plan?”

Grabbing a stick, I drag it through the sand. “Nah. I’d like to go someday. It’d be smart to decide what the hell I want to do with my life before I apply, though.”

“Good idea. But if money wasn’t an issue, where would you like to go to school? And what would be your dream job?”

I shake my head, my throat getting tight. I haven’t talked about this to anyone in a very long time. Not even my mother—and yet, here I am spilling my damn guts all over the place to this girl. “I don’t know. I’ve always been interested in law and justice. Boston College has a three-plus-three program. Three years of undergrad and three in the graduate program.
