Twenty-Eight

Emily

My mind keeps returning to when I found Theresa in the kitchen, desperately fanning the smoke around her. When our eyes met, I saw her hopelessness and embarrassment. I had to use all my strength to keep myself from laughing.

This heiress really needs a lot of lessons in life. She wasted a tray of eggs in one go! And I don’t even want to talk about the bread.

Well, at least she’s honest about not knowing how to cook before today. I know she’s embarrassed, but she’s just being true to herself. I showed her how to cook an egg, and I’m sure she wouldn’t be able to remember even one step next time.

But while we’re in the kitchen trying to clean up the mess, I discover that I’m surprisingly comfortable. I’m having fun, and all the thoughts I fought while I was alone in her room vanished. Here I am again, falling for Theresa’s charm and warmth.

“Can we eat now?” she asks, wiping the counter with paper towels. It’s funny how she’s never concerned about her supplies. But I can’t blame her; she’ll never run out of them anyway.

“What do you mean? You still have to cook an egg,” I tell her, emptying her trash can.

“I already cooked one!” she groans.

“And you burned it, ma’am,” I tease.

“But you already cooked two!” she argues. “That’s enough, right?”

“We’re not eating until we have your perfect eggs, Theresa,” I challenge her, taking the paper towel from her hands and throwing them into the trash can. “Wash your hands and try again.”

“Are you serious?”

I look up at her, smile, and nod. “Of course, I am!”

She stares at me, evidently annoyed and still wondering if I’m joking. I stand up, push her gently to the sink, and make her wash her hands. “Come on. You don’t want to starve, do you?”

She finally laughs and then splashes some water on me. I shriek, hit her arm playfully, and put the pan back on the stove. She’s not going to fool me this time.

“Em, I’m hungry,” she moans, drying her hands on her apron. “Can we just have the two eggs you cooked? And we have toast, too!”

I notice how good her arms look in her sleeveless top. The apron adds to her hotness, too. She could pass off as a carefree, rockstar wife.

If only she knew how to actually cook.

“Just make one more for me, please?” I beg, giving her my puppy eyes. I pout, acting like a child asking for some candy. “It’d really make me proud…”

Theresa squints, bites her lip, and shakes her head. She chuckles as she points a finger at me. “You’re really doing this right now, huh?”

I don’t know why I’m letting my guard down. I’m teasing her, being soft and warm, and it feels so good. I can see she’s enjoying this side of me, too.

“Alright,” she huffs, grabbing an egg from a tray. “One sunny side up egg, coming right up!”

I do little jumps while clapping. I tiptoe next to her and rest my head against her arm.
