Grace

Day 2: Southern Texas

Walter kept the shotgun in unsteady hands as the figure shambled toward them.

“Sweet Jesus,” Grace muttered. “Is that you, Brandon?” She’d seen people who’d fallen asleep on a hot summer’s day, but Brandon was lobster red and almost out of his mind with the pain.

Walter handed her the gun and walked toward his friend, though he stumbled as he held out his hands.

“No! Please. Don’t touch me. You got anything for the pain? Grace?”

“Back at the house,” she said. “You want to go there?”

Brandon walked on. His pants were ripped and dusty at the knees, and his limbs twitched as if in terrible pain. “Got to.”

Grace and Walter shadowed him, one on each side, until she sped up to unlock the gate.

She sat Brandon on the couch in the front room and gave him the maximum dose and a glass of water.

“Got anything better to wash it down with, Walt?”

Walter fetched out the bourbon and poured two glasses, draining one and handing the other to Brandon. “What happened to you, Bran?”

The stricken man swallowed the whiskey in one and held out the glass for a refill.

“Watched the pretty lights last night from the porch with May. Figured I might never get another chance to see somethin’ like that. Took some Bud with me and fell asleep. Woke up in fearful pain and … and …”

Bourbon escaped in bubbles and drips from the sides of his mouth as he began to sob. Grace tried to take the glass, but he didn’t loosen his grip and she gave up.

“What happened, Brandon?” she whispered.

“May … May … she was … lyin’ there in the rocking chair.” He turned his tortured face to Walter. “She was dead, Walt. Dead. Knew it as soon as I saw her. Eyes shut, but not moving an inch. What do I do?” He dropped the glass and reached out in utter desperation. “What am I gonna do? God help me!”

Grace kneeled and took his hands. “I’m so sorry, Brandon. But May has only gone where we’re all about to follow. This is the Rapture, can’t you see that?”

“Then why ain’t we been taken up into the sky?”

“We don’t know what is going to happen exactly, but we got our Lord’s promise, so we gotta stay strong.”

Brandon exhaled as the combination of morphine and liquor began to bite. “Went to the Johnson’s first, hopin’ their truck worked. No sign of them. Don’t know what to … do …”

With that, he passed out.

“It sure was the Angels that did it, then. Poor Brandon, he’s in a lot of pain,” Grace said, looking down at the red-skinned man curled up on her couch. “How are you feeling?”

Walter swayed a little and put his hand to his forehead. “Not so good. Why don’t you call the neighbors? I’ll go and sit down for a bit.”

She watched him walk slowly out of the living room, her heart pounding in panic. Would what had happened to Brandon also happen to Walter? He hadn’t been out all night, that was for sure.
