20 Run Rabbit, Run
McDowell decided to discard the bike sixty miles outside the city when she had been approaching the point at which she needed to travel across the surrounding natural terrain. This, coupled with the fact that she stuck out like a sore thumb, as she seemed to be the only living soul travelling on that particular road, had convinced her that it was time to look for an alternative means of transport. She was exhausted by now and had been awake and on the move for more hours than she cared to remember and still there was an extremely long way to go before the safe haven of the commune. Her clothes were not up to the job of spending a night out in the open – and nor was she. Her mouth was throbbing again as her body’s adrenaline subsided. McDowell knew she would have to commandeer another all-terrain vehicle. So she laid her discarded bike on its side in the middle of the road to create the impression of a recent accident and moved across to the undergrowth on the shaded part of the verge to rest and wait for some unsuspecting male to take the bait.
McDowell woke with a start when she heard the groan of the large mineral ore lorry labouring to a halt. She tried to move and obtain a better view from her hide. However, her muscles had other ideas and immobilised her with pain as they refused to raise her battered body. Enduring the pain, she eventually sat up as if made of cardboard, unable to move comfortably. She rested there for a while, damp, shivering and yawning, before she felt strong enough to attempt to overpower whoever it was with the vehicle. The hiss of a cab door opening alerted her to the presence of another and then McDowell heard a soft, reassuring voice, ‘Go on boys, go find him.’
The undergrowth rustled ominously and McDowell heard the first bark just as the dogs broke through into the small den that she had made for herself. Before she could grab her pistol, the first dog was on top of her, snarling viciously, as the other bit into her right forearm. McDowell tried to struggle but with the weight of the dog on her chest and the pain from the teeth still sunk into her arm she decided that it was best to give it up - for the time being at least.
‘What have you got my boys?’ said the truck driver, who was now slicing through the undergrowth with a customised machete.
‘Heel!’ he shouted when he finally saw what it was that the dogs had attacked.
Immediately, the dogs stopped what they were doing and ran back behind their master. They looked like Doberman Pinchers but strangely they still had their tails intact. McDowell nonchalantly reached for her pistol and noticed a trickle of blood running over the veins on the back of her hand as she trained its sight on the luckless driver
‘Please don’t make me shoot you.
