As Trey walked into the dining room, the morning calls of birds penetrated through the opened window. The aromas of a hearty breakfast delighted his nostrils, but didn’t distract him from his purpose.
Trey turned the key, locking the dining room door against visitors. He mentally noted the absent members of his team. Denise was sitting with Livvy while she slept off the effects of the laudanum. The yeoman was adding coal to the furnace before relieving Chester on grounds patrol. Michael was monitoring the switchboard and reception.
Trey looked at those seated around the table. “Please finish your breakfast while the food is hot. I have something new for you.”
“Something serious happened to Livvy before dawn today.” All eyes were glued to him while he described what he’d seen. When he finished he added, “This could be a warning like the Crystal Pond warning, but I have security on alert in case we’re targeted for sabotage. Muriel put her to sleep with laudanum and the doctor is on his way.”
Concern etched worry lines on everyone’s faces.
“What can we do?”
Garrett aimlessly pushed his fork against the bacon on his plate. It was unusual for him not to delight in eating.
“I’m hoping one of you can figure out where the attack is coming from.”
John answered. “Our best bet is to scour the papers for something that happened around that time of the morning.”
A practical man. Trey should’ve thought of that idea himself. In the future, he must guard against being drawn so far into the intangible that he lost sight of everyday solutions.
“I’ll have someone drive down to the gate for them.” Trey buzzed the switchboard and spoke into the receiver for a few minutes. He hung up. “Michael will contact Chester on the walkie talkie. He thinks it’s too early, but he’ll have him look for the papers. After we’re done here, I’ll phone naval headquarters to see if they know of anything.”
Isadora raised her hand. “While you were on the telephone with Michael, I checked my crystal ball for nearby disasters. Holy moley. Fires, car accidents, heart attacks, but nothing that makes military sense.” Isadora cocked her head and frowned. “One thing was eerie.”
“What?” Trey was unable to keep the stress out of his voice. The word “eerie” put him on edge.
“The crystal found a threatening cloud targeting Livvy, like the funnel of a tornado. I told that image to move aside so I could see who was behind it, but it wouldn’t do what I asked.”
“What’s so eerie about that?”
Isadora seemed shocked that he didn’t understand.
“It takes a strong force to defy our family crystals. We’ve been at this a lot of years. We’re tops.”
Trey looked around the table. “Allied reports say Nazi occult practitioners are scheming up mind control attacks on the United States. Do you think Livvy’s vision could’ve been activated from Germany?”
“Distance doesn’t matter to a spirit,” John said.
Muriel spoke up. “I wonder why the rest of us aren’t sick. I didn’t feel a thing and I often feel my patient’s symptoms.
