Chapter Nineteen

The profound relief I’d experienced just a moment before faded in an instant. As Airis gazed up to the sky, the mild breeze quickly grew into a howl, making her golden hair whip wildly and the ivory dress billow about her legs. The puffy white clouds descended upon us, turning an angry shade of gray and obscuring the sun. The previously tranquil waters turned choppy, littered with whitecaps. The balmy temperatures dropped in an instant, sending a chill up my spine. When Airis’s gaze met ours once more, I shuddered at her changed appearance.

The octogram tattoo upon her chest began to glow, first from the designs inside its center, then radiating outward, like the flow of electrons through the electrical circuit Liam had described. The glowing lines extended across her chest and down her forearms, igniting the circle inside of each palm and concentrating her powers in a particular spot. They spread down her legs to the circular tattoos on the tops of her feet.

“The alchemists told me it would be simple to reverse this process and make me whole again. All I needed was a volunteer. These moai were not enough, but they serve me well. You, on the other hand….” Her voice trailed off while a malicious gleam filled her eyes.

I glanced nervously at Liam, all too late realizing her intention. She had created a small army to do her bidding. And we served as the catalyst to complete her transformation to her former glory as a living Elemental.

“Not a chance,” he spat, his hands balling into fists at his sides.

Her glowing eyes of glacial blue narrowed. “It’s not like I need you anyway. In case you haven’t noticed, one of the benefits of living on an island is that I have an abundant water supply. You see, I have already learned to harness the power of the sea on my own.”

To emphasize her point, she swallowed her anger, channeling her rage into her core, and then directed both tattooed palms out to the ocean. A violent gust spiraled outward from each hand, picking up dirt and debris as they raced across the land. They soon reached the sea, funneling water upward in a pair of giant waterspouts that spun like ghostly twins. The twins then split, spawning more waterspouts that circled the island, churning the water’s surface into a frothy blend.

Liam mockingly shook his head. “You are sadly mistaken, Airis. You only touch the surface, not the great powers that lie beneath.” And to emphasize his point, Liam snapped his fingers with ease. I saw the waves behind him swell three times their original height, cresting over as they raced toward land and crashed loudly upon the rocky shore.

“Insolent boy,” she sneered as her furious eyes turned a uniform shade of ghostly white. She directed one glowing palm at Liam’s chest and blasted him with a gale force wind that knocked him off his feet and sent him flying backward at an incredible speed, straight into the torso of the largest moai.
