My dears! I have arrived at the place [of my imprisonment]. My boy was placed in the “Children’s House” (a kind of nursery at the prison compound). When we talked [back in “Kresty” prison in Leningrad] we agreed that if the conditions for my baby in the prison labor camp are not good, you will take the baby. I had hoped to keep him here with me until autumn. By that time he will be a year old and it will be easier for you to take care of him. But I believe it is necessary for him to be taken from here as soon as possible or he will die. I understand that raising my son will burden you with additional concerns and responsibilities, but he is precious to me and I want him out of harm’s way. He is an excellent child and before we arrived at the prison camp he was healthy and quiet. But now he is ill. He has an abnormally high temperature; the doctors suspect that he is suffering from pneumonia. The weather here is not good; it is unwise to walk outside and the air inside is unhealthy.

I beg of you to take Andrei from here. I know that the trip to the prison camp will be expensive so do not bring me anything. I just want to save my son. I am trying to spend as much time with him as I am allowed. I know that he misses me when I am not with him. He cries when I am not with him. He is fed only my milk. I shall try to feed him solid food in the near future. He now weighs 6.5 kilograms [14 pound and 5 ounces]. The question is - who will come to the prison camp to get my son? Who is able to take care of him on the long journey back to Leningrad? I believe you know to what I am referring, especially mother.

I will be given the opportunity to write my next letter in November. Prisoners are allowed to send only two letters in a year. I desire to see you, but I know that is not possible. I will not be given the opportunity to meet with the person who comes to take Andrei from here.
