Chapter Seven

Will shifted until he was facing the steering wheel again and adjusted himself in his pants. He almost groaned when he noticed Winter watching slyly from the passenger seat with a hungry look in her eyes. There was plenty for her to look at. He couldn’t help his reaction to her. She was a fucking wet dream come to life.

Winter began giving him directions to her apartment complex, one he was familiar with after answering more than one call to the popular area. A high number of college students lived there, and their shenanigans usually had the station out at least once a month. As he drove them slowly through the now quiet college town, he asked her questions about random things. Family, favorite foods, pets…he wanted to know it all.

He learned that she loved Chinese food, most of her time was spent either working or in class and her roommate was a hilarious but crazy. In turn, she found out that he had bought a fixer upper earlier that he was working on during his off time. He had a rescue dog named Buck, after Buckaroo Bonsai, and was one of four siblings.

“So, earlier Enrique said something about sacrificing chickens?” Will probed as he pulled into a parking spot in front of her building. He’d been curious about that conversation since he’d walked into the middle of it.

“Oh, that,” she chuckled, her smile lighting up the darkened cab. “He likes to tease me sometimes because I’m an atheist and his family is super Catholic.” Unbuckling her seatbelt, she turned slightly to look at him. “Is that going to be an issue?”

“Why would it be an issue?” he asked, confused.

“There was a guy that dumped me because his family couldn’t handle the fact that I didn’t share their beliefs. It didn’t start out as a problem until later in our relationship when I was asked how I would raise a kid,” she explained.

“You were serious enough to talk about marriage?” For some reason, the thought made his chest tighten.

“Oh no,” she answered with a shake of her head that immediately loosened the band restricting his breathing. “That relationship was only two months old, but he came from a very religious family—something I didn’t know before we started dating. I have nothing against it, I just don’t believe it in myself. His family—uber religious—basically considered us engaged after a few dates. It was weird. At one family dinner, his mom asked whether or not I planned to raise my kids in the church and didn’t like my answer. After that, there was nothing but constant pressure to change. Even the way I dressed became a problem. Nothing was ever good enough.”

“Damn.” He couldn’t imagine trying to live up to expectations like that. It sounded as if they’d wanted her to be an entirely different person.

“Exactly,” she agreed with a sad smile. She glanced down at her lap where she was twisting her fingers together. “I learned my lesson though. Which is why I was curious about where you stand on the subject.
