Iona Freeze was waiting. She had already leaked word to the authorities that Leon Hurts and Augustine Ward were on the loose. And she had a ship waiting to take them wherever Leon wanted to go. The plan was a long shot, and not as clean as ordering a hit. But there weren’t many button men who would take a job against a well-known bounty hunter. Most had warrants out for their arrest, which meant they were limited in where they could go, and how they could pull off the hit. But the real limiting factor was that none of them wanted to be captured and sent to a penal colony. Better to die fighting, than to get stunned by a lawman’s non-lethal blaster and get locked up in chains for the rest of one’s life.

When Leon walked into the room a few minutes later, Iona wasn’t sure whether to be angry or impressed. The old man had on a long coat, which wasn’t unusual. The strange part was that it was dark purple. She couldn’t understand what part of blending in the old felon didn’t understand. He was not what she had expected. He was charming, but also profane, fearless, yet at the same time uncertain. Along with the purple coat he had a flat-topped black hat. It was quite the combination. Despite his age, he was a big man with broad shoulders and barrel chest. Yet he spoke with a smooth voice that made him seem younger.

“What do you think?” he asked, taking a spin in his new duds.

Augustine Ward was behind him. He had on new clothes, all in shades of brown. He could blend easily into a crowd, especially since she had paid to have the damage to his left hand repaired. The gunslinger had a bionic finger and thumb, both covered with synthetic flesh. Unless a person got a long look at that hand, or shook his hand, they would never know it wasn’t natural.

“He looks like he just lost a job at the circus, you ask me,” Augustine said.

“No one is asking you,” Leon said. “I want the opinion of a lady.”

“Ain’t many would call me that,” Iona said.

“Well, I’m one,” Leon said. He was being charming, and he was damn good at it.

“You look fine,” she said, deciding not to chastise him for his fashion sense at the last minute. “Now let’s get off this station before the Transit Authority spots you.”

“They aren’t looking for me,” Leon said. “They’re looking for an old man, who’s desperate and trying hard not to be seen.”

Iona wasn’t sure his logic was sound, but he knew how to stay cool under pressure, and she had gotten both Leon and Augustine new identification. It would pass basic scrutiny, but if it was run through a GC database it would probably be discovered as fake. And no amount of colorful clothes, or good paperwork would change Leon’s retinal image, or DNA. If a cop ran those, they were dead in the water.
