When she woke, it was well-past dawn; the other three were still sleeping soundly. Bobbi carefully crept from the room without waking them, her emotions and thoughts still caught up in a tangle.

Why had things turned out like this? Everything had been going well. Okay, they had been going well-ish, but that was still an improvement over how life had gone for them before they arrived in Fairfield. They had found a place with a roof over their heads, and she and Jonah had jobs lined up, which they obviously had to abandon now because of the ultimatum.

Carol had even gotten to see a doctor, and they had managed to barter for some cute items for Tidbit.

So why then was their past so insistent on haunting their footsteps? They simply wanted to live in peace—was that too much to ask? Since the power had gone out, it had become an entirely new world. Why couldn’t people realize it and let bygones be bygones?

But no, those in power couldn’t leave them be. First, Mike was chasing them across Maine, and now, this so-called council was trying to chase them from Fairfield. It was infuriating. And she still thought telling Diego and Hicks about their situation was the best course of action. Mike was a powerful man, but he would not be able to stand against an entire town.

Why couldn’t the others see that?

Since the others were still fast asleep, Bobbi slipped out of the house. If she stayed, she wouldn’t be able to hold her tongue, and they didn’t need an argument right now, especially with everyone so on edge. Instead, she’d go to the market and see if she could find some rations that would travel well, maybe try one last time to find any word on Carol’s kids.

After all, if they were going to be chased from town, they might as well have a direction to run in. That or run from, since they didn’t want to lead Mike to Carol’s family.

They needed more information and more time.
