Aiden and I are lounging around today. It’s raining and dreary, so we have been curled up on the couch watching television. Aiden’s phone rings and I can hear it’s my brother on the other end. I can’t make out what he’s saying, but I hear Aiden tell them to stop by anytime, that we will be home all day. Today was Allison’s doctor’s appointment. I hope they have good news for us.
Aiden ends the call. “That was Liam. He wanted to know if they could stop by.”
“Yeah, today was Allison’s appointment,” I remind him.
“He sounded off. I hope everything’s okay,” he tells me. Liam sounding off is not a good sign. I can imagine my brother bursting at the seams at the news that he and Allison are going to be parents. I know there are a lot of false positive home tests. I try not to worry until I can hear from them what happened.
I curl into Aiden’s side and he wraps his arms around me as we wait for them to arrive. Twenty minutes later, there is a knock at the door.
We both go to the door to greet them. When Aiden pulls open the door, Liam and Allison are standing there. He’s holding her tight against his side with one arm while the others carries a white bag with a medical logo on it. I can’t tell from their facial expressions what’s going on. We step back and allow them to come in. Aiden leads the way to the living room. He sits down on the couch and pulls me onto his lap. Liam sits on the other end and does the same with Allison.
“What’s in the bag?” Aiden asks.
Liam pulls out a DVD and hands it to him. “Do you mind throwing this in?” he asks. Still, I can’t tell what’s going on and I’m too afraid to ask them.
I hop off Aiden’s lap and grab the DVD. I remove it from the case and pop it into the DVD player. Grabbing the remote off the coffee table, I perch myself back on my husband’s lap.
“That better not be a delivery video. I’ve heard about that shit. I don’t want any part of it unless it’s Hales,” Aiden says. He’s serious as a heart attack and we all laugh at him. His little outburst helps ease some of my tension. I’m still concerned and these two are giving nothing away.
Liam grabs the remote out of my hands and hits play. All eyes are glued to the flat screen as a black and white screen appears. I see Allison’s name and the date at the top. When my eyes finally find the center of the screen I see a black blob that is flickering fast. There is an arrow pointing that says “baby.”
“Holy shit,” Aiden says. “Is that…is that your baby?” His voice is gruff. I turn to look at him and his eyes are locked on the screen, a silly smile on his face.
I turn my gaze to my brother and sister-in-law.
