Chapter 4

“It was kind of like dinner theater,” Joshua said. “Only with a lot more screaming and crying. Michael and his sisters kept yelling back and forth. Mrs. F left a bunch of threatening messages on the bakery’s answering machine. Then she called the cops and demanded they do something. Finally, she called Aunt Ginger’s cell, and things really got loud.”

“Wow, my night was much more boring.” Alex slouched over the hospital admitting counter, his back turned to the overcrowded seating area while they waited for the paperwork on their last drop-off. “I spent an hour pulling plastic dinosaurs out of the back toilet. I think we hit a new record.”

“Did you make Tina apologize for drowning them in the first place?” Joshua hid his smile. Alex’s third, and youngest daughter appeared determined to surpass her siblings in all areas. Joshua admired that kind of grit, and the grief she gave her father.

“Of course.” Alex looked offended. “What kind of dad do you think I am?”

With the ease of long acquaintanceship, Joshua knew when to stay on-topic. “The best part?” He scanned the room for possible Fiorillo-related eavesdroppers. “Nobody noticed when I finished off the rest of the takeout.” He patted his stomach. “I haven’t been that full in weeks.”

“So what now? Everything get straightened out?”

“Mostly.” Joshua shuffled the papers in front of him before latching them onto his clipboard. “Mrs. F and Ginger conferenced her niece into the call, and man, I think my ears are still blistered. I almost felt bad for the woman.”

“Really?”

“I said almost.” Joshua held up his hands in a defensive qualifier.

The desk clerk returned with their stamped forms but held them out of reach until Joshua leaned forward to grab them. “How are things going with the wedding?”

By her smile, she must have some money down on whatever pool the ER had running. Joshua grabbed the sheets out of her hands and added them to the clip. As the attending EMT, Alex should be the one handling all the documentation, but somehow Joshua kept ending up with the job. “We’re getting there,” he said, the whole roller coaster of the last week audible in his reply.

“Crazy, isn’t it?” She waggled her bare ring finger at the two of them. “I swear, if I’m ever foolish enough to try again, we’re heading to Vegas.”

A couple of girls wearing hoodies crowded the counter, and Joshua stepped back, giving the clerk a nod. “Thanks, Jean. You have a good night.”

She waved them off with a roll of her eyes and a scowl at the newcomers. “Drive safe.”

“Then what?” Alex asked, continuing their conversation without missing a beat. He dodged an errant toddler and returned to Joshua’s side as they navigated the over-crowded space.

“After Aunt Ginger finished accusing her niece of ruining her business and her life-long friendships, they all came to a tentative truce. Ginger and Mrs. F will decide on our cake, and Ginger and Ed are flying in to make it and attend the wedding.” Joshua held up his hand when Alex made a face.
