When she drove past the Winterville Inn there were work crews dotted all over the driveway and the huge sprawling building, their yellow vests catching the last of the afternoon sun. They were starting to decorate for Christmas, even though Halloween had yet to come. Time was passing too quickly.

Before they knew it winter would be here.

This would be the last time she watched the decorations go up as a single woman without a child. Next year she’d have a baby. Not even a newborn but a real, big baby who would likely be crawling and pulling decorations down from the tree.

She had so much to do. Yes, she was in the house but she wasn’t prepared at all. And next week they’d open the shop and things would get crazy.

“Can you drop me and Cole off at the Tavern?” Kelly asked, looking up from her phone. “Grandpa’s there and there’s a problem with a delivery.”

“You need some help?”

“Nope. There’s somebody you need to talk to. No putting it off by helping me.” Kelly smirked and tapped out a quick reply on her phone.

“I don’t even know where he is right now.”

“There’s only one way to find out.”

Amber parked outside the Tavern and helped Kelly and Cole unload their bags from shopping. Cole insisted on carrying the Thor costume, his cheeks pink with pleasure as Kelly’s dad came out and Cole showed him the hammer.

“Thank you,” Kelly said, hugging Amber.

“Shouldn’t I be thanking you? I feel like I just had hours of therapy,” Amber said, her voice muffled by Kelly’s shoulder.

“No. I should be apologizing for bossing you around. It’s so much easier when it’s not your own life, you know?”

Amber nodded. “I do.”

“So next time I get hurt by a guy you can lecture me,” Kelly offered.

“It’s a deal.” It would almost certainly be a while. Kelly rarely dated. Between running the Tavern and being Cole’s mom she swore she didn’t have time. But there was more to it than that. More than Amber could unravel in a quick mall-therapy session.

Maybe once she got her own life sorted out she’d help Kelly, too.

“Oh no.” Kelly’s voice lowered to a whisper. “Why now?” She leaned down to Cole. “Go inside, honey. Stay with Grandpa.”

Amber followed Kelly’s gaze, swallowing when she saw Kyle Walker bearing down on them, his eyes dark and narrow.

“Oh God,” Amber whispered, as he stopped in front of them and folded his arms across his chest.

“Is it true?”

Amber swallowed. “What?”

“You’re pregnant?” His gaze flickered down to her stomach. She was wearing a long sleeved t-shirt and a pair of yoga pants. Comfortable and revealing her now-rounded bump.

“Yes.”

“Is it Shaun’s?”

“Shouldn’t Shaun be asking that?” Kelly asked. She looked fierce, like she was about to go into battle for Amber.

Ignoring her, Kyle took a step closer to Amber. “What are you doing? Trying to trap him?”

“I’m not trying to trap anybody,” she told him. “I’m pregnant and the last I heard it took two to make that happen.”

“So why haven’t you told him?”

“She has tried!” Kelly threw her hands up.
