If Falcon had actually waged his soul, itâd probably be mounted on a wall somewhere in the Belly. Or locked in the Darkwielderâs vault by his proxy, Jasper Salt. Maybe stuffed in a drawer gathering dust. Waiting, like Trixâs sister waited, for the day Falcon might pay his debts.
But tonight is about making Wick Sneed wish for a quick death.
Thereâs no good reason the Crowfell bossâs right-hand man should be in Galdur, with his paws on their girl.
âFalcon!â Ophelia cries. But his name is garbled by the thick fingers on her throat. Heâs seen her kick, seen her scrape her nails across menâs faces, but her limbs look heavy now, like she hasnât got the energy.
âFalcon Thames. As I live and breathe.â Wick Sneed darts his slippery head around Ophelia to see better.
âYouâre a long way from Crowfell,â Falcon spats. Did Vesh Derringer send him? He pictures Sneed waving Aceâs bloody hands, taunting him, that night near Ghastly.
The bastard looks genuinely surprised to see him. But heâs also scanning for an escape route.
Whether he came here for Ophelia or not, heâs planning to take her.
âLetâs forget the nice-to-see-you shit,â Falcon grates. âIf Veshâs got you recruiting for the fights, youâre out of your territory. Youâve got no damn business in Galdur, or with her.â
Rune steps up next to Falcon, probably because he knows him well enough to guess where this is headed. Even with a hand in his pocket on that fancy stone, though, he wonât be much help. Heâs got to be close to empty, having practically drained himself in order to slow the flood of shadowcasters at Trixâs.
âI think we have a misunderstanding,â Rune tries to use his influence anyway. âYouâll let her free, and weâll be on our way.â
Of course, it doesnât work.
Instead, Sneed watches Falcon, a tight smile pulling the corners of thin lips. âConsider this a special job. One that transcends boundary lines.â
Special job?
Itâs probably true that half of Magus knows about Ophelia now, thanks to the bounty. Is that why Sneedâs here, poking around for a boss?
The possibilities clang around in Falconâs head, along with Grimmâs half-warning in New York. âItâs unlikely the king is your only threat.â
âSheâs spoken for,â Falcon tells Sneed. âYouâre gonna let her walk.â
Sneedâs eyes shift to Falconâs weapon. Falcon watches the shadowcasterâs hands. The second Sneed gets one free, Falcon knows heâll send his shadows.
Sneed shifts under the gaslight, his eyes too big, pupils dilated and twitching. They remind Falcon more of Magies who relish Ghastlyâs dark corners than a bossâs right hand. Sneedâs been dabbling with something, which surprises Falcon.
Vesh Derringer doesnât tolerate hopping from his men.
As Falcon scrutinizes him, Sneed abruptly pulls a blade from behind Opheliaâs back.
Falconâs knife.
The shadowcasterâs eyes roll up to the moons and back, burning at Falcon. âI claim her. In the name of Erebus, god of the red moon, father of the Witchistsââ
âThatâs enough.â Falcon spits. âThat archaic shit means nothing here.â Not without a primordial relic.
Falcon charges forward, hopping over the
