Fourteen

The first two divers from the opposing team scored, on average, 7’s from the judges. I knew nothing of diving or their scoring system, but I assumed the amount of flips and the size of the splash counted for something. Given our team had two divers as opposed to the five from our opponents, Ben and the dark-haired boy I didn’t know carried extra pressure to score and place higher.

They announced Ben’s name, and I rested my elbows on my knees as he climbed the three steps to the board. He walked to the edge and turned his back to the pool, balancing on the tips of his toes, and I shamelessly ogled his tight ass stuffed into his tiny Speedo. Hot damn, indeed.

His back muscles flexed as he raised his arms above his head, and the room went still in preparation. He paused, breathing in deep, before he bent his knees and threw himself backward off the diving board. He brought his knees to touch his chest before straightening his body and plunging into the water. There was barely a splash, mostly water bubbling up from where his feet disappeared, and the moment his blond head broke the surface, I stood and clapped along with his teammates.

Kim and Caroline waved their boas as Esther cheered, and Ben swam to the ladder and pulled himself out of the water with a satisfied smile curling his lips. The judges held up their score cards, three 8’s, and the team went wild again. Damn, Ben was good.

“Holy shit!” Kim squealed as Caroline crowed. “I had no idea he was that good.”

“Me neither.” I shook my head, clapping and yelling Ben’s name, and after receiving a shoulder clap and some advice from his coach, he glanced in my direction with a shy grin.

Each diver performed six dives in growing levels of difficulty, and Ben fought for first place with the fourth diver from the other team the whole time. They were neck and neck, Ben pulling ahead only for the boy close the gap at his turn, but I was hardly interested in the competition. No, I was too busy admiring the way Ben manipulated his body, twirling it with flexibility and grace. My imagination ran rampant at all the possibilities. He was incredibly talented, and, hell, was he bendable!

With his last dive, he walked to the middle of the diving board and used his foot to adjust the spring of the board with the large white wheel on the side. When he was satisfied, he returned to the back of the board and took a few deep breaths, calming himself.

Walking determinedly, he swung his arms, each movement purposeful, and jumped on the end of the board. He gained a surprising amount of height before he twisted his body, tucking himself until his nose pressed to his thighs as he descended toward the water. I stood, worried for the impending belly flop. He straightened at the last minute, shooting into the water like a torpedo, and other than a larger than normal splash from his feet, the dive was a success.
