Chapter Thirteen
Gillian had talked to Piper on the phone on Sunday during one of Piperâs breaks at work. Piper had asked if they could have lunch on Monday at the museum. She wanted to come into DC to see the new exhibit they were featuring. Gillian was proud of it, and she was excited to show Piper her work. Monday morning, Gillian pushed Piper out of her mind so she could get as much work done as possible so she could give Piper a personal tour. Gillian had already told Maya that Piper was coming by, and Maya made Gillian promise to introduce them.
At twelve thirty, Gillianâs phone pinged with a text. Piper was just outside the café waiting for her. Gillian ducked into the bathroom near her office to check her hair and clothes and apply fresh lipstick. Knowing sheâd see Piper that day, she wore a sweater that accentuated her breasts with just a hint of cleavage. The brown color matched well with her own brown hair and highlights. She was relegated to wearing wool slacks due to the cold weather, but they still looked really good on her if she was being honest. She spritzed a little perfume on her neck, dropped her things back in her desk drawer, and took the stairs to the first floor.
She stopped on the third step from the bottom and locked eyes with Piper. Ooh, there went the butterflies. She was so good-lookingâsomewhere between pretty and handsome. Gillian took Piper in, looking really good in black jeans, a black turtleneck, and black leather jacket. The monochrome-look fit Piper like a glove. The closer Gillian got to Piper, the broader the smile filled Piperâs face. It was an incredible feeling that she was the one that could put that smile on her face.
âHi. You look fantastic.â
Piper shook her head. âI canât find the proper word to describe you because beautiful is so overused and not enough. Exquisite. Yes, thatâs it. Youâre exquisite.
âFlattery will get you everywhere.â Gillian finished the statement with a wink, and she knew it would not be difficult to continue this flirty banter with Piper, but sheâd prefer to do it in a more private setting. âCome on, letâs eat. Iâm famished.â
They grabbed their lunch and found a table with a gorgeous view of the courtyard.
âSo, I drove here today instead of taking the Metro. May I give you a ride home when youâre done with work?â
âIâd like that very much. Maybe we could grab takeout and have dinner at my place.â
âBrilliant idea. Hey, what did the potter say when he destroyed his piece of art? Thatâs just the clay it is.â
Gillian covered her mouth as she laughed. Piper took a bite of her sandwich and grinned from ear to ear.
âDonât worry. I promise not to tell you too many corny jokes. Iâd like to keep you around for a while.â
âIt just so happens I like your corny jokes.â And she did. Sheâd never known anyone like Piper. She
