Chapter Thirty

A Mutual Confinement

They were locked in Lily’s cabin.

They had been imprisoned all afternoon, with nothing but the sound of the crew celebrating to amuse them or let them know what was happening above. Cat was straddling a backward-turned chair, leaning on the backrest lazily to avoid hurting her wounds. She had noticed Lily look at her sideways once or twice but she said nothing about her unladylike pose.

“It is absurd to keep us locked up like prisoners!” Lily said suddenly. She had taken to pacing, and Cat was losing her patience with Lily, with her imprisonment, and with the discomfort of her injuries. “Especially,” Lily continued as if she were debating at a council meeting, “when the crimes have all been committed by this new ‘Captain’.”

“Would you rather be up there?” Cat snapped, “Dancing with Hood? Drinking with the crew? You wouldn’t last a minute out there.” Cat shifted her position, she was starting to ache everywhere, “But I don’t see why they had to bundle me in here with you. I should be out there singing and drinking to our freedom with the rest of them!”

“I’m afraid I simply do not understand how you can possibly think of celebrating the death of four men! Not to mention those poor men put to sea,” she turned to the window, wringing her hands. “We are a Pirate Ship, Lady Catherine! This ship is a danger upon the seas! Our lives are risk!”

“My life was at risk this morning!” snapped Cat, “under your bloody Captain! Those bastards would have killed me! Or do you have a poor memory? Is it only uniformed men who are to be mourned?”

“I’m sorry, I would never—”

“It is only thanks to this mutiny that I am safe at all! I’m scarred, and I’m confined in this accursed box with a whining brat… but I’m safe nonetheless.”

“A whining brat! How dare you—”

“Well, if you cease to act as one, madam, then I would cease to have the grounds on which to place that name upon you.” Cat replied with a mocking flourish of her hand.

Lily looked at her, open-mouthed, “You, m’Lady, would you honestly side with pirates? Murderous pirates, over an honourable woman who has done nothing wrong?”

“Those ‘murderous pirates’ saved my life.”

Lily laughed angrily. “I risked my very safety to release you from that wooden grate! Or are you the one with the poor memory?”

Cat dismissed Lily with a shake of the head. “You wasted your effort; someone else would have got to me eventually.”

Lily stepped toward her, furious, “You yourself declared to the crew that I saved your life!”

Cat shrugged, “I needed to lie to save you. You ought to thank me.”

“Nonsense,” Lily’s cheeks were flaring red with rage as she spoke, “You stood aside the moment I was threatened by that sword-wielding brute!”

“Fletcher Greaves is not a brute!” Cat said, standing. “He is one of the finest gentlemen I know!” Cat paused and relented, “perhaps not the finest, he is slothful, overconfident and full
