THANK THE GNOME FOR THE GEAR AND GO ON HER WAY
Although Sabrina was tempted by the gnome’s offer of adventure and escape from the cold elven city, she could not imagine herself partnered with the tiny gnome, even if their relationship was one of convenience. She said her farewell and left the gnome to finish loading up his pack.
Equipped for the journey with pick and rope and climbing boots, Sabrina began her ascent up the more rugged portions of Feyrock. The air became thinner and colder and it howled against her, seeming to cut straight through the jacket Bo had given to her. She stayed clear of the dark mouths of caves, despite the shelter they offered, and pushed on. She ascended nearly to the clouds, climbing over the black rocks and collapsing with exhaustion upon the upper plateau of Feyrock.
The sun was warmer here. The air more pleasant to breathe and the plateau sheltered from the worst of the high mountain winds. A golden forest stretched before her. She regained her stamina and continued on.
Soon she found a cobbled road. It was the path to Elsomyr. It could not be much more than a mile distant. She set off, through the golden forest that seemed the opposite of the Winding Woods in every way. Its trees were warm and comforting and songbirds seemed to follow her with their songs. Even the air itself was perfumed with flowers.
Elsomyr was an ancient and beautiful city of white towers and walls that had survived thousands of years without falling to intruders. She spotted it soon enough, the towers peaking above the trees, and soon Elsomyr dominated her view of the path ahead. The city perched upon the last summit of Feyrock as delicately as the songbirds in the golden trees.
She could see the White Bridge in the distance and her heart quickened. She rounded a curve in the road, expecting to see the way clear to the bridge, and stopped in surprise at what was before her. The songbirds were silent. The serenity of the forest was forgotten. A single man emerged from the wood. He was scruffy and his clothes caked in filth. He walked with a pronounced limp. He lifted his head and the princess nearly cried out. It was Ser Gewen!
The knight dropped to his knees and looked at her through the dark locks of his sweat-damp hair. He weakly raised a hand.
“Princess,” he called hoarsely, “it is good…to see you. I had feared you dead! Please, I am wounded. Can you help me to my feet?”
Her heart swelled. Her legs nearly carried her to him without thought. But the strange quiet filled her with a terrible premonition. She saw dark things she could not even speak of. She looked at the haggard knight, her relief at seeing Ser Gewen warring with her sense of foreboding.
