CHAPTER 4

Mila scrambled up to her feet, her body still naked, but her breathing apparatus and helmet luckily still intact. The alien breeder was still curled in the foetal position, in post-coital hibernation. Mila made her best attempts to clean it's goo off of her legs before slipping on the rags of her space-suit body. She grabbed the fallen hand-torch from the floor, and searched for the doorway in the darkness. The doorway, once lit by moonlight had been blocked, she stumbled forward, tracing her hands over the door frame. The creature had obviously shut it, probably to stop her from escaping. She searched the doorway and took hold of the handle, tugging on it with all her might. It wouldn't budge. She had been with Allan when they'd opened it, and now it seemed jammed shut, and she didn't have the strength to move it on her own. She tried again, pulling and tugging, rocking the handle and attempting to slide it open.

“Fuck it” she muttered to herself. She glanced back at the slumbering breeder – still hibernating – she had some time. Mila recalled the mine-shaft maps she'd studied beforehand while still on board the Orion. There was an exhaust vent not to far up, it was a narrow opening, but she should be able to get through.

Mila gathered her courage, she'd have to venture deeper into the mine tunnel, and then clamber up the vent shaft opening. Alone and afraid; Allan was obviously gone, and the Orion's control crew wasn't able to communicate with her on the radio deep in the mine shaft Mila closed her eyes and breathed deeply then turned from the sealed door back towards the darkness of the mining tunnel. She carefully walked through the darkness, creeping around the hibernating extra-terrestrial, trying to avoid casting much light on it in case that woke it up. She reached the metal gang-plank where Allan had disappeared – she assumed he'd been silently tossed down one of the mine-shaft pits by the alien creature while she had been inspecting samples. Grabbing hold of the railing, she walked down the metal walkways, careful where she stepped, trying to avoid making any unnecessary noise. She walked some hundred feet, down the mine tunnel before coming to a T intersection inside the tunnel. This is where she'd seen the vent shaft on the maps earlier. She searched the rocky ceiling and walls of the tunnel. There it was. Just in front of her, a small opening just a couple feet wide. She peered inside with her flashlight, the shaft ran diagonally upwards – at the top, she could see a dim light – she hoped it was the moonlight coming in through the exit opening. Mila sized up the hole, she could fit for sure, but she'd have to be careful with the oxygen tank and breathing apparatus on her back, it would be a slow crawl, but she'd manage. She crawled inside, carefully twisted and contorting her way through the passage.
