âI was just interviewing Henon about his people and Prehistoria. Itâs fascinating,â the reporter told us. âFor example, did you know that there is a tribe of what the Shayana call âaxe menâ to the far east by the sea?â
âAxe men?â I glanced at the Lieutenant. This was interesting news. âAre they friend or foe?â
Parsons leaned against the makeshift corral and shook his head slightly. âI get the impression they arenât exactly either one. The Shayana and these axe men tend to avoid each other but do on occasion trade.â
âHow far away are they?â Daniels asked the native as he pulled out the folded map from his breast pocket.
Henon shrugged. âFour or five days on foot. One day on breehas.â
âCan you show me on this map?â
The big Shayana circled an area with his finger by the oceanâs edge. âHere. But easier to show thou.â
Daniels marked the spot. âWe will take you up on that offer one day.â
This seemed like a good opportunity to get some information of my own, so I began asking questions to the Shayana.
âI killed an ape a while back. Big⦠ugly⦠scarred face.â I ran a finger from eye to jaw to show the location of the hideous scar on the ape leader Iâd killed in Granite Falls. âEver seen him before?â
Henon nodded. âWe knew of him well. Our raids on his villages yielded many slaves and he sought us out with his army. We were preparing defenses to fight him when he left the canyon and fought thou instead.â
I nodded, wondering how much they knew about where heâd gone. Surely, they could have tracked them and found the tunnel to our side. But no one, not even Thenory, had made mention of it, so weâd followed the Lieutenantâs lead and kept our mouths shut about where we came from.
âI saw them sacrifice a man on their altar. Was he one of yours?â
The Shayana grunted. âTis likely. We lost several scouts watching their army and never saw them again.â
It seemed my shooting up their ritual sacrifice ruined their plans to attack the Shayana and they went after us instead. That meant everyone who died on our side was my fault for trying to assassinate the ape leader after I saw him rip out the Shayana scoutâs heart.
Damn.
I looked around the village; there were a lot of little kids running around and dozens of women in view. Maybe I did some good after all. But it meant that Sheriff Dan and his nephewâs blood, and that of nearly a hundred others, was on my hands.
Daniels saw the look on my face and turned towards me. Heâd been well briefed in the events leading up to and through the battle. âNot your fault, Jed. They attacked your ranch first, remember?â
I kicked a small volcanic rock with the toe of my boot under the makeshift corral fence, thinking about the ramifications of my actions. It hurt to think of the course Iâd set myself and others on. But there was no changing it; what was done was done.
