Chapter 16

At twelve that night, Catherine is born, Heathcliff’s future daughter-in-law. Mrs. Linton dies two hours after giving birth, never recovering consciousness to miss Edgar or Heathcliff. Edgar is too grieved to have lost his wife. In death she has an angelic smile. Early in the morning, Mrs. Dean goes out to meet Heathcliff, who says he knows she is dead and becomes irritated on seeing Mrs. Dean weeping; Catherine does not need anyone’s tears. He looks at the sky and rants aloud, saying Catherine claimed he was responsible for her death and asks her to haunt him as her murderer in any way possible, but not leave him alone in the world, as he cannot live without her. He cries and bangs his head against the tree. Mrs. Dean realizes that nothing can be done to help him and he asks her to leave him alone.

The funeral is to take place on Friday and Edgar sits beside the coffin, day in and day out until his exhaustion forces him to sleep for a while. Mrs. Dean leaves the window open, where the coffin remains uncovered, so Heathcliff can say goodbye for the last time. After he pays his respects and leaves quietly, unnoticed, Mrs. Dean sees a light lock of hair on the floor, which Heathcliff removed from a locket around Catherine’s neck and then replaced with a dark lock of his own. Mrs. Dean twists the two locks and puts them in together.

Hindley, Catherine’s brother, does not show at the burial, so the mourners are only Edgar and the servants. She is not buried in the chapel or with her ancestors, but on a slope near the moor with a plain grey block at her feet. Years later Edgar will be buried beside her.
