Chapter 13

The monster observed the family day in and day out and noticed that Felix in particular was very unhappy. One day the monster saw that when all were sitting together, someone knocked on their door. Agatha opened it and asked who it was. The stranger asked for Felix. Felix came out and on seeing the stranger cried out in delight. The stranger took off her veil and the monster saw that she was an extremely beautiful woman.

Felix called her his sweet Arabian and took her inside. Felix introduced her to his father and the old man hugged her. The monster noticed that an expression of gladness had replaced the sorrow from all their faces. Everyone was genuinely happy since the arrival of the beautiful stranger. The monster understood that she could not speak their language, as they all spoke in a kind of sign language to her. Felix seemed particularly happy with the arrival of the stranger. Later on, he fondly bid her goodnight, calling her Safie.

Agatha and Safie slept soon after and the monster saw that Felix and his father talked for a long time about Safie. The monster noticed that both were extremely happy. The next morning Felix went out as usual and Agatha and Safie and the father stayed back and talked. Then Safie sang a beautiful song which moved the monster. No one was sad or depressed any more.

The monster realized that Felix was teaching Safie their language and he listened as Felix taught her not only their language, but many other things like history and geography. He listened to Felix imparting knowledge on various subjects like Christianity, the decline of the Roman Empire and all this made a deep impact on the monster. He understood basic human nature and all that man is capable of. The monster was awed by man’s intelligence and at the same time disgusted with his cruelty and greed.

The monster thus gained considerable knowledge listening to the lessons given to Safie. He learned about the ways of the world and the facts of life. He often wondered about his family and his brothers and sisters. The realization that he is not like normal humans and was bigger and uglier than them made him very sad. He is aware that there is no one like him and that he is alone. The monster had a strong desire to join the cottagers and become their friend as they were the only people he knew, but he was too scared to approach them.
