* * *

Tamuk squatted behind the rocks, watching as the wolves feasted upon the remains of their enemy’s hunters. Most of the remains. He had not permitted them Banahir. The raknari warrior who had led the ill-fated group lay in a heap behind Tamuk. He had other uses for that corpse.

When Nekelmu had first started trailing him out of the foothills, following the scent of the slaughter Tamuk was leaving in his wake, Tamuk had at first been alarmed. But the great wolf’s presence had worked into his plans better than he could ever have expected. Nekelmu was covering his tracks. So long as Tamuk stayed ahead of the pack himself, the wolf’s presence served his purpose.

He couldn’t help the smile that played out over his face. His Eye within Eldrax’s camp had led them straight to the kill yet again. Banahir had been just where the Eye had said he would be. Tamuk closed his eyes, savouring the memory of Banahir’s face when Tamuk and his men had sprung their ambush. Tamuk had to admit, as unprepared as he had been to face men rather than wolves, Banahir had put up a good fight. Rannac had taught him well. But skill had not been enough to save him.

Their plans were almost complete.

“That is the fourth hunting group we have butchered,” a nasally voice murmured in his ear. “We don’t need the Eagle’s Eye to tell us that Eldrax’s forces are weakened. We should descend now.”

“No,” Tamuk hissed. “Patience, Sakal. This fourth loss will push Eldrax over the edge. He will not tolerate such an insult and, in his rage, the Red Bear will blunder. The Eye will tell us when that is so.”

Sakal snorted, shifting her grip restlessly upon her spear. “He had better make it soon. I have waited a long time to shed Bear blood.”

“Sakal,” Tamuk smiled. “In a matter of days, you can spill all the Hunting Bear blood you desire. For now, we wait. Eldrax will err and the Eagle Clan will finally have its vengeance.”

Sakal snickered and pulled back. Tamuk looked out across the plains to where the smoke from campfires was rising upon the horizon. He could almost see the glimmer of the river he had spent his entire childhood beside.

Do you hear it, Khalvir? he thought. The footsteps of your doom approach and you will not even see it coming.
