Eden bit her lip at the sight of Brennon’s text. She smiled, the sun shining on her face through the open window. A warm breeze carried the smell of oak and the river blocks away. She stretched, the sheets sliding across her naked body and reminding her of Brennon’s mouth.

“Yes, Thorne,” she whispered. “Ruin me again.”

Before she could respond to the text, however, her mother called, and her morning-after buzz died a swift and anticlimactic death.

“Hey, Mom.”

“How was your week?”

Eden closed her eyes and settled in for the call, which lasted seventeen minutes and ended with Eden’s promise to take a long, brisk walk in the sunshine for the vitamin D and cardio benefit. Having a cup of tea on the porch while she relived last night with Brennon in her dressing room over and over again for an hour would likely have the same effect on her heart rate, but fantasizing wasn’t a weight-bearing exercise.

She swung her legs out of bed and pulled on her Lulu leggings and a sports bra. Throwing a hoodie on top, she went downstairs.

Maddox was on the couch with all the shutters closed, glued to his PlayStation. Eden sighed. It looked like someone else could use some Vitamin D. “Hey.”

“Just a sec.”

She waited a solid minute for him to arrive at the next checkpoint in his game. He turned to her with dark circles under his naturally deep-set eyes, which made him look even more hollowed out and broken. Scruff climbed his cheeks, and there was a coffee stain on the chest of his white T-shirt.

“Wow.”

He glared at her. “Thanks.”

She went through the room, opening shutters as she passed each window. “My mom wants us to go for a walk.”

“I don’t want to.”

“Neither do I, but she’s my manager, and we do what she says.”

“She’s not my manager.”

Eden walked behind the sofa and put her hands on Mad’s shoulders, giving them a squeeze. “It’s a gorgeous day, babe. The sun is shining, birds are chirping, the world is turning, and we’re going to go on a long, brisk walk through the nation’s capital. Let’s go find a cool monument or something. I hear this place is lousy with them.”

He took one of her hands and held it, leaning to rest his bristly cheek against it. “You’re a gem, Eden. But no.” He dropped her hand and picked up his controller. “You’re on your own.”

“Where’s Liliana?”

“Didn’t come home with me last night,” he said.

Eden scowled. “Has she checked in?”

“Relax. She left the theater with Jonathan.”

“Jonathan? Seriously?”

“And what were you up to last night?” he asked. “Is everyone getting laid except me?”

“Nope. My balls are as blue as yours. Promise.” Liar, liar, pants on absolute fire …

He chuckled.

Shit. Speaking of blue balls …

Eden raced back up the stairs and grabbed her phone, opening it to the screen with Brennon’s text. Dying to hear his voice, she pushed the call icon.

“This is very nineties of you,” he answered.

“I’m an old-fashioned girl.”

“I could get used to this. Talking to you first thing in the morning.
