Jace

They walked through the night and like the one before, looters, fires, and gunshots rocked the streets. Jace put the leash on Boon to keep him close and Rayne found herself often gripping his arm. Fearful of the chaos surrounding them, her eyes darted into every dark corner searching for warning or attack. They kept to the smaller streets and alleys to avoid the gangs that either already existed and simply took over or the newly formed gangs of roving looters seeking to profit from the disaster.

Jace guessed it was about three in the morning and they were all exhausted, even Boon limped along slowly. A van parked beside a dumpster in the alley looked like a good place to grab a few winks of sleep. The doors were unlocked, and windows tinted that allowed some feeling of safety. They climbed in and while Jace tried to take the first watch Rayne insisted he sleep at least for an hour and then she could grab some sleep. Her reasoning being that he’d suffered emotional trauma and needed to be on the ball tomorrow when they found Kelly. She would need him to be strong.

“I’ll just sit up front and keep an eye on the mirrors.” She clamored over the seat and stretched in the passenger side. Her eye caught a small green LED light glowing in the dark.

“Shit! A phone charger that works.” She snatched up the cord and it was for an android phone. “It figures.” She tossed the cord on the floor.

Jace reached into his pack and pulled out a small plug for a USB charger and passed it to her. “Do you have a cord?”

She fished through her things and the white cord emerged like a long snake. She squealed with excitement and set to plugging in her phone, leaned back and gazed out the mirrors for any movement.

Jace’s eyelids were heavy, he hadn’t slept since the small store and sleep washed over him in mere moments.

Music shattered the silence in the small space and both of them bolted upright. The sun was up. Rayne had fallen asleep as well and they both slept for some hours. The same number that had called before was calling again and Rayne fumbled with the screen lock to answer the call.

She quickly put it to her ear. “Hello… Hello… Cam? Is that you?”

A voice on the other end that Jace could not hear screeched. “What? Wait a minute, let me put you on speaker.”

Rayne put the call on speaker and a female voice excitedly emerged. “Oh, Rayne, I’m so glad I reached you. Something has happened in Denver, but Dad, Joey and I are all fine.”

“Denver?” Rayne questioned and paused. “Did the quakes reach all the way to Denver?”

Cami was silent for a few moments, some mumbling in the background filtered through before she continued. “No Ray it is something else. Near as we can tell it is all over the country. A guy on the radio was talking from West Virginia and they are having quakes too.
