Although written with conviction and generosity and perhaps truth, Collins's piece contains its share of platitudes and shows how a senior Timesperson can commandeer space.

Inadvertently belying Collins's claims of Wasserstein's universality, Virginia Heffernan's piece in the February 3, 2006, Friday Weekend gives us a strong clue to the reasons for this cultural hagiography by defining Wasserstein in terms of the politics of gender and the politics of wealth in New York: “She was the ultimate girl's girl, a woman whose presence in New York suggested the possibility of an unhostile and entirely female world, one open to no guys except her brother Bruce, the hedge-fund manager (he'd supply the capital), and gay men from the arts” (“Revisiting Wasserstein's TV, Where Female Stars Thrive”). Several worlds collide in the foregoing sentence, in which Heffernan alludes ironically to the importance of gay artists in the cultural world revolving around the stages of Lincoln Center and Playwrights Horizon. What Heffernan is implying is that in the aforementioned Manhattan special world—a world nourished and sustained by power brokers, gay and straight, who wield enormous monetary influence over aspects of New York cultural life—Wasserstein's operatic divas seemed to appeal to New York feminists within comfortable socioeconomic groups as well as to gay men, the latter finding these women to have the appeal of drag queens.
