Chapter 9

Shelley opened her eyes and yawned. After a late night with everyone’s parents, it was far too early to be awake.

The same light tapping that had woken her started again. Someone was knocking on the front door of her sister’s cottage. Throwing off her blankets, she grabbed her sweatshirt and headed down the hallway.

Bailey’s head appeared from around her bedroom doorframe. “I’m glad you heard the noise. I thought I was dreaming.”

Shelley checked her watch. “It’s only six-thirty. Was something being delivered this morning?”

“No, nothing. You don’t think something has happened, do you?”

Shelley hoped not. “There’s only one way to find out.” She hurried to the front door and threw it open. John was standing in front of her holding an enormous bouquet of red roses. “It’s okay,” she said to Bailey with a smile. “It’s John.”

The warmth in her fiancé’s eyes made Shelley sigh. “It’s supposed to be bad luck for the groom to see his bride before their wedding.”

“It doesn’t count when it’s Valentine’s Day.” He held the large bouquet toward her. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

“Thank you. The roses are beautiful.”

“I almost missed out. Blooming Lovely was busy yesterday. Did you have a good night’s sleep?”

“I did.” She pulled John inside. “Come into the living room while I find your present.”

Bailey’s eyes widened when she saw the bouquet. “Wow. I hope Steven’s remembered it’s Valentine’s Day.”

Before Shelley left the front doorway, another bunch of flowers appeared from around the doorframe.

“Surprise!” said a grinning Steven. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Mila raced into the house. “And from me, too,” she said excitedly as she hugged Bailey tight.

Shelley lifted her hand to her mouth to cover another enormous yawn. “It’s great to see everyone, but you do realize it’s only six-thirty, don’t you?”

“We got up extra early,” Mila said. “Dad and Pastor John wanted to surprise you.”

Bailey wrapped her arms around Steven’s waist. “You definitely did that. It’s the best surprise I’ve had in a long time.”

John walked back onto the veranda and picked up a picnic basket. “We brought breakfast for everyone. How does freshly baked croissants with ham, egg, and melted cheese sound?”

Shelley was imagining how good the buttery croissants would taste. “It sounds like heaven on a plate. While you’re making breakfast, I’ll get changed and find your present.”

Bailey held out her hand to Mila. “Would you like to come with me? There are more surprises in my closet.”

“Yes, please.”

Shelley watched Mila happily skip down the hallway. It seemed strange to think that after today, Bailey, Steven, and Mila would officially be a family.

John gently brushed a lock of hair away from Shelley’s face. “You look far too serious for this time of the morning. Is everything okay?”

“I was just thinking about the changes that have happened over the last few months.”

“And it worries you?”

Shelley looked into his eyes. “A little. It’s wonderful but scary.”

“There’ll be a lot more changes in the next few years,” John said quietly. “But whatever happens, I’ll be right beside you, on the same journey.”
