Chapter 15

Holly

Mom lived in a small ranch house.

When I walked inside, Mom called from the kitchen, “I’m in here.”

“Sorry I’m late,” I said as I joined her.

Mom pulled a casserole dish out of the oven and set it on the counter. “Were you working?”

“I got a good deal on a kiln, and I wanted to try and make a few new ornaments. But I couldn’t get the shape right.” I retrieved the plates and silverware to set the table.

It had always just been us, and we moved with the precision of having done this a million times before.

Mom frowned. “Where are you working? I thought you needed special hook-ups to have a kiln.”

Mom knew all about my dreams and why I couldn’t move forward with them.

I took a deep breath. “Talon is letting me keep it in his workshop.”

Mom’s eyes widened. “You’re talking to Talon again?”

She’d encouraged me to talk to him over the years, especially when everything first happened. She thought I was making a big mistake by walking away from him. But I was stubborn and couldn’t be persuaded to change my mind.

There was a hefty amount of guilt thrown in because I’d hurt him. There was never a good time to apologize and try to fix something, especially when it felt unfixable.

Nothing would bring our baby back or make me feel like I hadn’t done something to cause the miscarriage. Now that I was older and wiser, I could see things more clearly. But back then, I had tunnel vision.

“He bid on me at the bachelorette auction.”

Mom sighed. “I wondered what happened with that. You were worried about going out with a stranger.”

I smiled wryly. “I should have been worried about my ex-boyfriend winning me for the night.”

Mom’s forehead creased. “What’s going on? Does he want to rekindle your relationship?”

“He said he wanted to talk about things, get some closure, maybe even heal so we could move on. For whatever reason, he felt like I wouldn’t talk to him otherwise. He had to do this grand gesture to get me to talk to him.”

Mom nodded. “It’s about time you two were in the same room. Were you able to talk things through? Get some closure?”

“We have. I feel a lot better about things. I still feel guilty about how I handled everything.”

Mom gestured with her hand. “You were a kid dealing with adult issues. Besides, we all make mistakes. It’s how we move on from it that matters.”

“That’s the thing,” I said as I followed her to the table and sat down. “I haven’t moved on.”

She plated our food. “In what way?”

“I haven’t let anyone else in. It’s like no one could possibly compare to Talon.” And now that I’d been with him again, I could say that was true. Things were even better now that we were adults.

“You don’t think that talking to him now will help you move on?”

Tension crept between my shoulders. “That’s the thing. I’m not sure I want to.”

Mom sat at the head of the table.
