Sarah still hurt—it felt like she’d stopped a runaway train with her belly button—but the rush of adrenaline had restarted her system. The last thing she wanted was to run headlong into danger, but neither could she run away; something inside of her wouldn’t allow it. That was why she'd resigned herself to the nightmare of a bomb crippling London—and perhaps getting caught in its blast. Though she tried not to admit it to herself, death seemed almost certain now.
Perhaps that’s why she was doing this.
Death. An end.
There was a chance for her to stop the bomb now though, to prevent more blood being on her hands; a chance to walk away from this with her soul intact. But adrenaline alone wouldn’t be enough to keep her going—a virulent spike already fading. Something in her pocket would help her do what needed to get done.
Before leaving the Earthworm, Sarah swiped another painkiller injection from the infirmary’s supply closet. The label read: Ketorolac+epinephrine. A combined stimulant and painkiller to help injured agents escape the field before collapsing from their injuries. Right now, Sarah needed it to send her back into the field. She pulled the cap off with her teeth.
Howard caught sight of her in the rearview mirror and spun around. “What the hell is that?”
“A snack,” Sarah told him.
Before Howard could object, Sarah speared her thigh with the injector. A tingling wave flooded her body, but a minute later the throbbing agony in her torso subsided. She let out a sigh. Her body relaxed on the backseat.
“I really hope Jessica prescribed you whatever you just shot yourself up with,” said Howard.
“That’s between me and my doctor. Just stay focused on what matters. Has Palu run a background check on the players?”
“Not yet. He will get back to us as soon as he finds something.”
“It better be soon. We have about forty minutes left until London gets the biggest fireworks show in its history.”
She knew Howard understood the stakes. Looking out for her was just one of the ways he coped, even though it never failed to irritate her. “You know, there might not be any attack,” he suggested. “You escaping the warehouse might have thrown Al-Sharir’s plans into disarray.”
“I hope not,” said Sarah.
“What? Why?”
“Because if I’m right about the stadium, we have a chance to disarm and confiscate that bomb, but if Al-Sharir moves to Plan B, we have nothing. This way is better, even if we're cutting it close.”
He looked at the clock on the dashboard. “That’s an understatement. You know if the bomb squad can’t disarm the device, there’s a good chance we'll have front row seats when it goes off.”
“Are you saying we should make a run for it while we still can? Let the Bombies handle it?”
“No, I want to see this through. If they can’t diffuse the bomb, we can at least report back as much as we can before we’re done. We need to be there no matter what, in case there are clues. This is our screw-up.
