CHAPTER 13

“Noah?” Vivian struggled to sit up as Noah rounded the curtain into the sectioned-off area where Vivian lay.

“Whoa. It’s okay. Lay back.”

“I heard yelling…” Confusion clouded her eyes as she still struggled to sit, her neck craned as if to see around the curtain. “What’s going on? Where are the kids?”

“The kids are all fine. They’re up at the house sleeping.”

“And Dexter? He’s okay?” Her worry seemed to be easing, but her brow furrowed in concern.

“Also sleeping. He’s been at your side most of the day. The kids have been off and on too. They’d stay all day if they could, but Leona urged them to go outside. She’d call them when you woke up.”

“What time is it?”

Noah glanced at his watch. “It’s two thirty in the morning. Do you need something for pain? Leona left some pills for you if you need them.”

Vivian shook her head. “No. I’m tired of the fogginess. And the nightmares.”

Noah moved to her side and reached for her hand. “Do you want me to get Dexter? Or Leona?” He was probably the last person Vivian wanted to see at her bedside. Of all the people in their group, he and she had very little in common. He was an unrelated male, and she was at her most vulnerable.

But to his surprise, she gave his hand a squeeze. “No. I’m okay. If you could scoot that glass of water closer to me, that would be wonderful. I’m so thirsty.”

Noah glanced at the bedside table and slid the water glass to where Vivian could easily reach it. “Do you want fresh water? I don’t know how long that’s been sitting there.”

She tilted the glass. “No. It’s fine.” Several sips later, she set it down, her eyes already closing. “Will you stay here with me?”

Noah pulled up the chair Dexter usually sat in. “Absolutely.” Even if she hadn’t asked, and if he hadn’t already committed to staying until Leona relieved him later, he wouldn’t have left her alone with Daniel.

“Who’s the other guy over there? And what’s he yelling about?”

“He’s a very confused and angry man, but he won’t be here long.”

“That’s good, because maybe I was still in the middle of my nightmare, but I could have sworn I heard someone talking about zombies.”

Noah patted her hand and forced a teasing tone in his voice. “I promise I won’t let any zombies eat you.”

“You’d best not, or when I turn into a zombie myself, you’ll be the first one I’m coming after.” She smiled although her eyes were closed.

Noah chuckled. “Get some sleep. I’ll be right here if you need anything.”
