Chapter 13

That was definitely not how Ellie thought the night would go. Adrenaline pumped through her veins, making it impossible to calm down. Her heart slammed against her chest, and all she could do was continue to breathe in and out, trying to steady herself.

It had been intense and terrifying, and she wondered if that was just another day on the job for Shaun. He had been so calm and collected when the bartender pulled the gun, he didn’t even flinch. It was as if it happened to him all the time. The idea was a frightening one. How many times had Shaun put his life on the line for his work?

She brought him into this mess, and part of her was grateful. Once that guy started flirting with her, she knew she had put herself in a position. Despite her self-defense classes, she wasn’t sure she’d have been able to fend him off. He was bigger, stronger, and he had a bar full of friends who would look the other way. But Shaun… It didn’t matter that the one guy was bigger than him, or that the bartender had a gun. Shaun transformed into a trained assassin with such skilled precision with each hit.

She glanced over at him. A bruise was forming on his cheek and spreading down his tightened jaw. It only added to his air of mystery. He put himself between her and a gun tonight. Whether it was out of duty, honor or because he couldn’t bear to see her hurt, it didn’t matter. He protected her, saved her from harm, and right now, he never looked hotter.

Reaching out, she dragged a finger down his cheek, and he winced. “You’re hurt.”

“It’s nothing,” he said, but there was an edge to his voice.

“It’s not nothing. It’s bruising.”

“It’ll heal.”

“You don’t have to play the tough guy anymore. It’s just me.”

“I’m not.” His words were clipped, and she let her hand drop. She settled in her seat and exhaled. Maybe he was mad at her for not listening, but how could she sit back and do nothing when they were so close to finding her brother? She had an opportunity, and she jumped on it. Was that so wrong?

She took in another breath, her hands shaking from the adrenaline leaving her body. Shaun glanced at her, and she saw a shake of his head. Damn it. He was pissed at her.

She could say something, justify her actions, but everything was still so fresh, so she kept quiet the rest of the way to the motel.

Shaun pulled in front of their room and got out, not waiting for her. She slid from the truck and met him at the door as he used the key to unlock it. When unlocked, he pushed it open with his arm and waited for her to go in.

She passed him, wanting to touch him to release the tension that was stiffening his stance, but thought better of it.

“I’m just going to get out of these clothes.
