Between Evie putting her through a particularly grueling training session that morning—“Holidays are over, Rowan, it’s time to focus! Eight months until the Games. Seven until team selection. And there’s no guarantee we’ll get a women’s sabre team in, so you need to secure every point you can in these next few tournaments for an at-large bid.”—and riding the high from everything that had happened with Serena the day before, Rowan hadn’t given the premiere much thought. Hadn’t given it much thought, that is, until she was standing in her closet, trying to figure out what to wear.

Which, she was starting to realize, might have been a mistake.

She chewed her lip as she stared at her collection of suits. She had no doubt that Serena would be absolutely stunning, and she needed something that would make her look like she belonged at the side of such a beautiful woman.

“Fuck it,” she muttered as she pulled her tuxedo from its hangers. She added a crisp, white button-up to her pile and, after only a moment’s hesitation, plucked a black silk bow tie with a matte-diamond pattern from her collection to go with it all. At least this way, she wouldn’t be under-dressed.

Once she was dressed, she turned her attention to the watch collection that was neatly ensconced in a handsome tigerwood display case. This was, if anything, a much more difficult decision. It was really her grandfather’s fault, Rowan thought with a fond glance at the late 1930s JLC Reverso he’d given her after she’d won her first sabre tournament. I’ve had my turn,” he said as he’d placed it on her wrist with no small measure of pride glinting in his sharp green eyes, “now it’s yours.”

She’d tried to return it to her grandmother when her grandfather had passed, but her grandmother had pressed it back into her hand. “This way, a part of him will always be with you. Besides, you don’t like earrings and brooches much, do you, my dear?” she’d asked gently. Even now, Rowan remembered how she’d frozen at the observation, the part of her that was only just beginning to accept her sexuality feeling a little too seen, but her grandmother had only smiled and patted her hand. “A good watch can be just as beautiful and elegant as any piece of jewelry.”

The gift of the Reverso and her grandmother’s words had sparked a lifelong fascination for Rowan. What started as a touchstone to the past, and a liking for something that wasn’t just aesthetic but functional, turned into an appreciation for how a single item could combine centuries-long craftsmanship with new advancements in precision, and marry technology—movements and complications—with design via a myriad of finishes, materials, shapes, and appliqués. And
