Chapter Twelve

Clio

When Violet walked out of the cell, she gestured for Clio to do the same.

He rose carefully, adjusting his shirt and smoothing his hair down. Being thrown around a cell, it probably looked like a bird’s nest, complete with forest pine needles.

It was ridiculous to think about his appearance at the moment. Not after what had just transpired, and yet the anticipation that he was about to see…

“Jackson won’t mind the hair. Plus, there will be a bathroom in your room. You can doll yourself up.” Violet, apparently, had no grace hiding her thoughts.

Clio nearly growled at her.

When they left the room, Clio wasn’t surprised to see Jackson himself outside, pacing the corridor. He seemed surprised by their appearance, so Clio guessed that he hadn’t been able to hear the conversation that had taken place within the room. Good. The doctor, thankfully, was nowhere to be seen. Clio had spent all of five minutes in the ‘lab-whore’s’ company, and detested the man.

Jackson’s eyes widened upon seeing Clio. He seemed so shocked, it was nearly comical, the way his eyes bulged and his jaw dropped. He collected himself quickly, however, and anger was quick to replace his previous surprise. “What the hell is he doing out of his cage?” he snarled. He looked quite ready to snatch Clio up and drag him back to his cage, like Clio was a bad cat that had escaped its pen.

Clio snorted.

“Good news!” Violet announced. He had a feeling she proclaimed this frequently, whether the ‘news’ being announced was good or not. “Clio has decided to cooperate with us! The holding cell is no longer necessary.” She had an expectant smile, like she expected applause after this.

Jackson’s reaction was the opposite. Clio swore he saw flames when he let out a puff of air, red in the face. “And you believed him because he told you this? Are you an idiot?!”

“Yes to the first …” She had to consider. “Um, no to the second. Clio will not cause us any problems, rest assured. You, on the other hand…”

Nothing she said seemed to ease Jackson’s temper. “He’ll cooperate with us?! With what? You still haven’t said a single word about why you had me bring him here in the first place. You’re breaking our agreement!”

Violet rolled her eyes. “Agreement? Pray tell, what agreement? I don’t believe I recall a conversation in which we came to some kind of agreement. What is it, exactly, do you want?”

Silence followed this.

Clio had been wondering this as well, as, so far, the mystery of what Jackson desired still remained. His attention narrowed in on him.

Everyone seemed to wait for an answer, even Jackson himself. His eyes slid to Clio, narrow and intense. But he said nothing.

Violet clapped, as though she had made a ground-breaking discovery. “I know a solution! Joint-custody! You get him Monday through Wednesday—Delta, Thursday, Friday. Trade off on weekends?”

“This isn’t funny, Violet. This is bullshit. And not safe. This isn’t what I signed up for, and you know it.
