RATIO BREATHING
In this practice, you will count your breath. For example, you may inhale for two counts and exhale for two counts. It sounds like this: inhale one, two…exhale one, two… On inhale, you will inflate your belly (rather than your chest): inhale one, two… Then on exhale, your navel moves toward your spine: exhale one, two…. This is basic breath training.
When you feel you have that down, you can include a brief holding of the breath for one to two seconds. It will look like this: inhale (inflate belly) one, two…hold one, two…then exhale (deflate abdomen, navel to spine) one, two….Ratio breathing is pretty cool because you can expand it when you are ready, moving from the one/two hold to a four/six ratio. This means you will inhale to the count of four and exhale (longer) to the count of six. By the time you get to six, your navel will not only be pressing back but lifting in and up. This is how you access the pelvic floor, which plays a big role in digesting your emotions.
