The Same Reason As Me
Peter
When my dad told me he wouldn't be coming to watch my basketball match, I went into a downward spiral. I'm glad to say that I'm no longer in that place. Usually, a bad mood like that will last at least a full day, but I got out of it quick this time. And I know it's because of Emily.
I swing beneath the railing, my mind still focussing on that bag she gave me. It's like I said before - sometimes, words aren't what is needed. In my case, Emily's gesture was more than enough.
"Is it because I'm small and annoying?"
I glance to the side, wondering if it's possible to conjure someone from your thoughts. When I see Emily jogging to keep up with my stride, I can't help but smile.
"Nope," I turn away as we approach the door. As I do, guilt presses in on me that this is her guess. While annoying may have been my answer before, I hope that's not how I've made her feel.
I open the door, allowing enough time for Emily to enter first. When she doesn't, I realise she's no longer with me.
"That only counts as one!" I hear her call somewhere at a distance.
I smile to myself. Yeah, I'll let her have those two guesses if only to hear her say it herself. Because I'm cute. Surely she can figure that out on her own.
Inside the school, it takes me a full two seconds before I realise something is wrong. It's the temperature. It's like I'm walking through a refrigerator. Seeing a sign on the wall, I walk up to it, groaning when I read the word âheaterâ coupled with âbrokenâ. I don't like being cold. Remembering the hoodie I stashed in my locker, I make a U-turn. Mine is located on the other side of the school. If that isn't bad enough, it's also right next to Hannah's. And she always has her cronies with her.
"It's freezing," I hear her complain as I approach. "Honestly, why haven't they sent us home already? I could get my dad to sue this place." She slams her locker door shut, noticing me.
Keeping my eyes ahead, I stop at my locker. Maybe if I don't make eye contact, she won't talk to me. That never works.
"Hey, Peter, do you want to join us in our attempt to close the school?"
I feign coolness as I pull my hoodie out, but closing the school is the last thing I want. "Nah, I'm fine being here."
"Maybe if I had an extra layer, it wouldn't be so bad."
Noticing her eyes on my hoodie, I tuck it beneath my arm. "Right."
"I just hope I don't catch a cold," she continues, rubbing her arms with a sigh.
Emily gets the cold a lot. What was she wearing before?
"Peter?"
I clear the frown from my face. "Sorry," I say, setting off into a walk, "I'll see you in class."
What was Emily wearing before? I keep an eye out for her as I make my way to class, but I only find her when I get there.
