At lunch he ate a sandwich at his desk. More than once he thought about Erica. It wasn’t fair to be so unresponsive. He made plans to tell her, to explain what was going on and why he was acting the way he was. To go by her office, tell her to drop whatever she was doing, and take her hand and lead her down the elevator and take a walk together downtown. He would tell her then, everything, and it would make sense. She would understand, hug him, maybe even cry a bit because that was what women did. She would tell him to keep her informed, that he could tell her anything anytime, that they would go through it together. They would walk back to the office holding hands, and would not give a shit who saw.

He made these plans and then broke them. They were not based in reality. She would not understand why he felt the way he did. Nobody would, because it made no sense. Even he didn’t get it. There was nothing to get.

There was no great struggle for David Grasso; he’d just gotten a few emails.

So he stayed at his desk, a prisoner. He stayed a prisoner at JF&A, and a prisoner in downtown Chicago, because whatever battle had been fought, he’d lost.

David ate his sandwich and googled Duane Hill.
