Chapter 23

The Passage narrowed as they entered Two Peachtree’s loading dock. Once-white tile had become dusty grey, muting rather than reflecting the weak light that made it this far down the passage. Abigail found a stub of a candle in her rucksack, and they paused while she lit it with one of her few matches. It flickered to life, and she put it in a glass chimney made from an old bottle. She hit the steel door three times and pulled it open. In front of her, the guard jumped to his feet.

“Sleeping again?” she warned, and Miles entered behind her.

Joseph Pugh rubbed his eyes and grunted. “Yeah. I hate early morning tower duty. This thing is like a fuckin’ tombstone.”

“Who’d you piss off?”

“Ah . . . I lost a poker game. Gary and I were playing, and I got ballsy. He only beat me by a face card,” he said.

Abigail laughed. Despite his present position, Gary was once a part-time magician, and most people learned not to play cards with him.

“He probably didn’t slip it in. No use winning by such a slim margin,” she said. “We’re going up to the lab, and then I’ll be back down.”

“Heard something happened earlier,” Joseph asked as he walked them over to the stairwell. Abigail filled him in, and he whistled. “So Duke made his move. I’m not surprised. The Accords couldn’t hold forever,” he said.

Abigail nodded. She and Miles walked into the stairwell. She lifted the candle high as they went up to the third floor, where part of the floor had been partitioned into laboratory space. As Miles unlocked the door they could hear movement further up the stairwell.

“They always find a way in,” Abigail said.

“Vermin,” Miles said. “Very smart vermin.”
