Back outside, Catherine was at the spot in the clearing where the bird had been. She said, ‘I don’t understand how it ended up here.’ She had a shattered eggshell in the palm of her hand. It was sand-coloured with speckles, and looked light enough to blow away in the slightest breeze. ‘It can’t have fallen out of a nest. There aren’t any trees close enough.’

The edge of the woods was about ten metres away. The chick had been between the door and the woodpile, only a few steps from the table.

‘Maybe the nest was on the ground.’

‘Then where is it?’ She took a photograph of the eggshell on her phone and carefully wrapped the broken pieces in kitchen towel. ‘Are you ready to go?’

We were heading to Mallaig to report the break-in and the scratched car to the police. We also needed a locksmith. When we got a signal I found one online and called the number on his website but he didn’t answer.
