Chapter 12

Elliott shook like a leaf as he sat in Principal Lopez’s office with Mrs. Lachey. Principal Lopez listened to Elliott’s account of the story before calling Myron to her office to hear what he had to say.

By the end of the meeting, Myron and his two friends had to call their parents. As they waited, Principal Lopez apologized to both Elliott and Mrs. Lachey and instructed Elliott to go to class.

“What happened?” Jodi asked in a whisper as Elliott took his desk.

“I’ll tell you later,” Elliott whispered back, hoping she would just drop it. He had almost every eye in class staring at him. From the whispering he heard, stories about his encounter with Myron the day before were already circulating around the class. No doubt, most had put two and two together when Myron was called out of class and Elliott showed up late.

At recess, he took Jodi aside and told her all about everything that had happened the previous day after school. “I don’t know what is going to happen to Myron and his friends. Principal Lopez just told me to go back to class.”

“Well, you let me know if he messes with you again. I’ll beat his face in,” Jodi made him promise. It was the kind of thing most people just said and were all talk, but he knew Jodi would do it. She was a lot tougher than he was.

Myron never did come back to class. There were rumors going around that he and his friends were suspended for two weeks. Elliott didn’t know what to think. He was glad he wouldn’t have to put up with Myron for a whole two weeks if the rumors were true. But, what was going to happen once the two weeks were over? He decided to just worry about it then, and just enjoy the start of his weekend.

During their weekly movie night, Hunter reminded Elliott that they were supposed to have a re-match at the park with Jodi and Ryan. “Are you up to it?”

“Definitely!” Elliott answered excitedly. He had almost forgotten all about it. For the rest of the night, though, it was all he could think about.

The next morning, Elliott was up bright and early and showered and dressed before Hunter even woke up.

“What are you doing up so early?” Mrs. Lachey joked when she came out of her room in her bath robe and saw that Elliott was already finishing up his breakfast.

“Hunter and I are going to the park to meet Jodi and Ryan,” he answered. Mrs. Lachey smiled, thinking about how much he had changed in just the past few weeks.

By the time Elliott made it back to his room, Hunter was beginning to stir. He stretched his arms and yawned and Elliott thought he was going to try to go back to bed, but he eventually got up and threw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Instead of getting a big breakfast, he just grabbed something he could eat on the way.
