Chapter Twenty-Two

“Why did you set up a smoke box in the woodshed without telling me, and isn’t it dangerous to have it out there with all those stacks of dry wood?” Courtney greeted Ben with her questions as he soon as he climbed off his quad bike.

“Yeah, I did have a good day. Thanks for asking.” He stepped up onto the porch and propped himself up against the wall of the house with one hand as he kicked off his boots, the new pair that he’d ordered online and had delivered to the farmhouse. Maria and her van had delivered the parcel to the farmhouse gate, although Courtney was in the shower when she came and she didn’t notice it until she went out to hang the washing. The new boots hadn’t prevented his socks from filling with mud and dust but they weren’t as bad as the last pair had been.

“Are you going to answer me or not?” She followed him into the house and through into the kitchen, where he headed straight for the fridge. He’d stopped drinking soda in the past week and he now preferred to drink from a pitcher of lake water that he kept on the refrigerator shelf. Courtney was horrified when she first saw him return with several containers of lake water but as he pointed out, they regularly ate fish from the lake without any harm done so why shouldn’t they drink the water? Courtney had not tasted the water herself but she was dubious of the faintly muddy color of the water and the distinctly fishy smell.

He poured water from the pitcher into a tall glass. “It’s fine to leave it out there. The embers are safely contained in the bottom of the box and there’s no chance of the stacks of wood catching fire. Don’t nag. What’s for dinner?”

A red cloud of rage dropped down in front of Courtney’s eyes, momentarily blurring her vision. “Can you just quit with calling me a nag? I’m tired of it. It’s rude and insulting.”

He tipped his head back and drained the glass before sitting it down next to the sink. “You never used to be like this.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” She could hear the high-pitched whine in her voice and she hated it. “I could say the same about you.” She plunged her hand into her skirt pocket and pulled out the bracelet, dangling it from her fingertips as she thrust it at him. “Where did you get this?”

Something dark flickered across his face but then it was just as quickly gone again, making her think she might have imagined it. “I found it down by the lake. I thought Leah might like to play with it.”

She didn’t believe him and it made her feel ill to know that she didn’t believe him. She dropped the bracelet down on the counter, where it spun across the flat surface before falling into the sink. “I would never give it to her to play with.
