What could I tell them? That Gil Bright thought I was a victim of child abuse? That I’d seen two men kiss and my heart sung? That in a moment of weakness I wished I could trade places with Amelia Bright? I couldn’t say any of that.

So I told them Gil Bright said he’d think about it. He’d read his Bible and do some soul-searching. That was the most we could hope for. I did not tell them we prayed together or that I converted him. I did not say how he and his family made me feel. They did not know, they had no idea, that it was me, not him—I was the one who’d been changed.
