Chapter Three

“I’m not waiting anymore.” Raider pulled his stocking cap over his ears and put his coat back on. He’d like to shift and make the journey in his bear form, but Kailu didn’t like it when he was naked around other people. He’d have to shift to his human form if he were to have dinner at a table. Frankly, he was happier in his bear form. Things were easier, and he didn’t have to pretend to be a civilized human. He could catch fish and eat berries and not have to interact with people.

Apparently elves didn’t feel the same way he did. If they did, he’d be in bed with his mate. Instead he was heading into the forest so he could make nice with the in-laws.

He’d be earlier than they were expecting him, but he didn’t care. The second Kailu left his cabin, Raider’s chest started hurting. His heart physically ached. He had fought the urge to go after Kailu long enough. Damn it.

Raider had an excellent sense of smell and could easily follow Kailu’s scent, but the footprints in the snow made it even easier. As Raider walked, the forest grew dense, and he saw more than one set of footprints, as well as thin wheel tracks.

Raider wondered if they’d finished finding the Yule tree Kailu had talked about.

He walked another couple of miles and came to a place where big boulders jetted out from the earth as if they were stone statues dedicated to the gods. There seemed to be a narrow path between them, and Raider wasn’t sure if he should go in or wait here.

He decided to call out to Kailu first, so he did just that. After about ten minutes, he called out again. “Kailu!”

“Hold on,” someone said. He wasn’t sure who the person was. All Raider knew was that it wasn’t Kailu.

Another person said, “Why are you here?”

Raider took a step closer to the gap. “Why the hell can’t I see you?”

“The elders put a spell on the village so no humans can see it or even cross the border. We’re just waiting for an elder to open the door so you can enter.”

“I’m not human.”

“Yeah, Kailu told us. He gets this goofy look on his face when he talks about you.”

“Who are you?” Raider asked.

“Lethon and Savel, Kailu’s brothers,” one of them answered.

“Can one of you please go get Kailu?” He was about ready to come out of his skin waiting to get his hands on his mate. He started pacing, unable to keep still. It was like he could feel Kailu just out of reach, and it was slowly sinking into his bones, making him just a little more desperate with each passing second. His bear was so close to the surface. He wanted to shift but fought the urge.

“He’ll be here shortly, I’m sure.”

“Why didn’t he come?”

“We were outside when you bellowed. He was inside talking to Mom. He probably hasn’t heard you yet,” one of them said.

Raider growled.
