Chapter 34

Cat and the others were quiet as he approached the fire.

“Good to see you again. I’ve always wanted to say ‘Hello, the fire’ and ‘I come in peace.’ They always said those lines in the movies.” He still had his hands in the air.

“Movies?” asked Cat.

“Never mind,” he answered. “I’m talking to the wrong crowd. Can I put my hands down? I have a pistol on my hip and a rifle on my horse, tethered a ways back. I have no other weapons.”

Zack patted him down and took his pistol from its holster.

“Help yourself,” said the man sarcastically.

“He’s okay,” said Zack.

The man put his hands down and said, “’He’s clean,’ is how they used to say it in the mov….” Then, he stopped, remembering Cat’s response to his previous comment.

“Are you hungry?” asked Cat. “We have lots of fish.”

“Famished, but can I go get my horse? I don’t want to leave him out there with hungry animals.”

“That’s fine,” said Cat. “We’ll have to recheck you, though.”

“I expected that. The word is frisk, by the way. You’ll have to frisk me.”

When he left, Wade said, “What a character. Can we trust him?”

Cat shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know yet. He seemed sincere in the bar, but you never know.”

He was back a couple of minutes later and tied up his horse with the others. He allowed himself to be frisked again, then sat down by the fire. Cat gave him a plate of fish, which he hungrily attacked. The others waited for him to get some food in his stomach before they began asking questions.

When he slowed down, Simon started it off.

“I’m Simon,” he said. “This is Cat, Darcy, Wade, Zack, and Carson.”

“I’m Brew. The last name’s really Killebrew. Everyone has always just called me Brew.”

He took another large bite and chewed it slowly. He seemed to be savoring it.

“Excellent fish,” he said when he finally swallowed. “Thank you. It beats beans and tortillas. That’s all those people back at the bar seem to know how to make.”

He took one last bite, then set his plate on the ground.

“So, your first question is what am I doing here, right?”

Cat nodded her head.

“You want the short version or the long version?”

“Let’s start with the short one,” said Simon.

“Okay, the short version is, when I saw you all, I realized that I had to get out of there. I had been there far too many years, and I had never liked it. It was just someplace that I ended up in. How sad is that? Anyway, there was some information I held back, mainly because I wasn’t comfortable talking in front of the morons who surrounded me. So, spur of the moment, I decided to get the hell out of Dodge … I mean, get out of there and catch up with you. My original intention was to pass on the information then move on, but as I was riding here, I suddenly thought that it’s time I do something worthwhile, so I’d like to help when you go up against Taggart.
