Followed by a variation on the eleventh text:

Call me, plz.

‘Oh hell,’ said Marnie. ‘We were out last night, I didn’t see these, I just plugged the phone in and went to sleep.’ She glanced up at Kaarin. ‘A fundraiser at the hotel.’

Kaarin said nothing. Oh, how much power was conveyed by silence. It made Marnie furious with Kaarin and also with herself for being intimidated. ‘Please tell me,’ she said again. ‘Is everything all right?’

‘Phone her and find out.’

‘Not with you here! Can I have privacy? What is this about?’ Anger made her incautious. ‘This is my daughter, their mother. Where is Brayden, can you tell me that, at least?’ ‘I don’t have that kind of information. Tell me this, though, are you feeling well?’

The question surprised her. ‘I’m not sure I understand you.’

‘Simple enough, isn’t it?’

‘I’m fine. Thanks.’

‘Can you tell me today’s date?’

‘Yes.’

Kaarin waited.

‘I need you to tell me what’s going on,’ Marnie said more quietly.

‘Humour me.’

‘I’m not required to humour you.’

‘You can be compelled to undergo a medical assessment.’

‘Sorry? On what grounds?’

‘Diminished responsibility.’

Oh my giddy aunt! What new nonsense was this? What had Eleanor said? Denying it, getting into a tizzy, that would make her look guilty and, yes, unhinged. Marnie said, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I will phone my daughter. I don’t even know why you’ve called by, but thanks for alerting me to the fact that my daughter has messaged me, which I would have found out anyway as soon as I turned on my phone. I really don’t know what else to say to you.’

Kaarin was on her feet, bestowing her smile. ‘You’ll have to be out of here on Monday, we spoke about that.’

‘I’ve made arrangements. Thanks for the reminder.’

‘We’ll need your new contact details.’

‘Contact details all exactly the same. I’ll give you the address within two weeks. Thanks for calling.’

This time she felt cautiously confident that her tone was right but knew there would be repercussions. Kaarin was the kind of person who exacted revenge slowly.
